Kokomo is an unincorporated community in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. Kokomo is located on the east side of the Kosciusko River. Kokomo was laid out in 1881 by George Pyle and named after his native town of Kokomi, Japan. The first paper mill in Kokomo was built in 1884 by J.W. Hennessey and C.G. Smithsson based on a patent granted to John Davenport for a system for making paper from plant fibers (see History of Paper Mills in Kokomo). The first jute mill went into production in 1889 by Arent Fenton and Bros., followed by the first cotton gin in 1893 by Wm. Gorman & Sons.. In 1898, First National Bank became the first bank west of Chicago when it opened a branch here; this building still stands today on Main Street near the junction with State Road 810. In 1907, First National Bank merged with First Illinois Trust Company to formFirst Illinois Bank & Trust Company which continued until 1959 when it merged with American Express Corporation to becomeFirst Interstate Bancorp Inc.. In 1959 First Interstate Bancorp Inc also changed its name to Cooperatives Resources Inc.; later that year it changed its name again to Cooperatives Resource Partners Incorporated; and finally that year to Cooperatives Resource Partners LLC! In 1941, before World War II began, there were no schools or hospitals serving Kokomo area because most people living here came from nearby DeKalb County or even more distant Fort Wayne-South Bend metropolitan area.]] After Pearl Harbor Attack local businesses such as grocery stores closed their doors as people felt they had nothing left to contribute towards war effort]] However many local residents who remained did not evacuate as many others did away with fear of possible Japanese aggression.]] They formed their own organizations including "The resistance" which successfully lobbied state legislators for passage of legislation authorizing the purchase of weapons from America's allies Britain and France so that Kokomo could be protected from any potential attack.]] This group helped arm local farmers and protect their properties during wartime.]]] Since post-war times KOKOMO has experienced growth with various businesses opening up shop here such as: internet cafes/sites like Google/Facebook etc., small business owners starting up operations within specific niches (photo frames/jewelry stall/clothing store etc.), cultural events like Oktoberfest etc., increased tourism due to popularity of surrounding areas like Indianapolis etc., development along I-465 corridor bringing new jobs and possibilities for annexation into larger communities (e.g.: Northside village], increase in property values due to growing populations density,) numerous philanthropic endeavors committed by individuals / groups both local & national alike through donations towards various causes throughout community life!]
Kokomo was founded by two brothers, George and Jacob Kokomo in 1824. The city was first named after General Anthony Wayne, who had helped to drive the French out of Indiana in 1763. It became a town in 1829, and was renamed Kokomo after the nearby village of Kokomogoria. From 1840 to 1847, the Indian Creek Agency operated from here. In 1861, the town was incorporated as a city with a population of 6,000 people. The city's first mayor was James Senter. On December 5, 1886, Mayor Senter resigned effective immediately due to an impeachment accusation against him which he had not yet been able to clear up.
