The USS Indianapolis was a .50 caliber machine gunboat that served in the United States Navy during World War II. She was sunk by Japanese forces near Yokosuka, Japan on 08 October 1945. The USS Bunker Hill was built as an auxiliary cruiser for the US Naval Forces Europe in 1944. She served in that capacity until she was decommissioned in 1946 and sold to the Swiss company Eidgenossische Küste AG as SSK Aarau on 15 May 1946. On 8 October 1945, she collided with the Japanese freighter Shimane Maru while steaming between Yokosuka and Gotenhafen, Germany and sank her. The USS Indianapolis Museum of History is located at Pier 21 Inlet on Mahoning Bay in Kokomo,Indiana which opened to the public on 10 September 1998. It is home to over 1,500 artifacts from both World War II and contemporary naval history. Kokomo is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana. It is located in the Kokomo Mountains, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Indianapolis and 30 miles (48 km) north of Chicago. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Kokomo is part of the Kokomo-Thawte Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Kokomo were French traders in 1674, who established trading posts near what is now downtown Kokomo. In 1814, when Anthony Wayne became generaledirector of Indian Affairs for the United States, he ordered all eastern Indiana villages to send one boy to report on their people and resources. In 1825, George Rufus Lilly founded a gristmill on White River west of present day Kokomo. He named it after his mentor and friend Drury Lane Kirkpatrick, an early settler in this area who had been educated at Philadelphia's Westminster School and then served as superintendent of Indian affairs for much of Ohio and Michigan Territory before moving toIndiana in 1824-27 where he became involved with business activities including founding a bank - which still stands today - and developing land around it that would become today's central business district known as Lilly Park. In 1840, James Hays founded a iron works adjacent to modern day Kokomo; this mill provided jobs for many locals during the early years following American independence from Great Britain. However by 1850 most local production had shifted towards agriculture due to cheap labor available from Mexican immigrants working on large cotton plantations downriver in nearby Terre Haute or Westville Village though some residents did remain employed at Hays' iron works until its closure in 1906 amidst declining demand from these same mills as productivity increased elsewhere within American industry overall during this period). Kokomo was founded in 1836 as a small village on the banks of the White River by Simon and George Kokomo. The village grew to become an agricultural center with several thousand residents in early 1900s. In 1954, Kokomo became a city after it was annexed by neighboring Decatur. The city's growth slowed around the turn of the 21st century as many new resident moved into other cities in Kosciusko County while Kokomo experienced declining population numbers and economic decline. However, since 2007 Kokomi has seen resurgence with new development such as a new stadium and library which are both home to professional sports teams - the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears - as well as cultural events such as music festivals and art shows.
Kokomo, Indiana was founded in 1814 by a group of men led by George Stephenson. The town was named for the Kokomo Creek. The first post office in Kokomo opened in 1816. In 1827, the land around Kokomo was surveyed and sold to John Davenport, who built the first large hotel in Kokomo. In 1835, the canal was built through Kokomo and became a major transportation artery. By 1840, there were over 100 businesses and 3000 residents in Kokomo. In 1850, the first school was opened in Kokomo. The town continued to grow until it had over 1500 residents by 1860. During the American Civil War, Kokoma served as a military base for Union forces and was one of several towns that sided with Confederate General Robert Ewing against President Abraham Lincoln. After the war ended, most of the population left for good or moved away because of changes in policy at the United States government after Reconstruction began.
