The Coast Guard Station Lake Station in Indiana is one of the oldest and most well-known Coast Guard stations in the United States. The station was founded on December 12, 1851 as a small fishing village on the shore of Lake Michigan. It grew to become a major sea defense center during the American Civil War, and was eventually renamed Fort Wayne after General George Washington's victory at Yorktown. In 1906, the station was moved from its original location to its current site on Fort Wayne's eastern side. The station has served as a base for numerous law enforcement officers and firefighters since its inception, and has been responsible for rescuing passengers and crew members from shipswrecked along the Indiana coast since 1912. The Station also provides services such as Search And Rescue, Ship Maintenance, Recreational Boating, Heavy Marine Patrols,and Airport Surveillance. As a result of its longtime service to residents throughout Lake Station County and Fort Wayne Township, the Coast Guard Station is considered an integral part of local culture.

In 1977, President Gerald Ford awarded the first unit of Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) to the Coast Guard after seeing their effectiveness when combating piracy off Florida’s barrier island communities during Operation Neptune’s Spear. The program continued through 1992 when LCS No. 4 was lost at sea while deployed off Long Island City Pier; however its loss did not setback efforts towards providing better maritime security for Americans at home and abroad. Since 9/11/2001, many members of both uniformed services have responded to disasters such as Hurricane Katrina or Hurricane Rita with quick deployments or temporary duty assignments ashore until relief could be provided by landing gear shortages or airlift from Guam or Hawaii - all in support of Homeland Security mission objectives! One example is Guardsman First Class Sean Breslin who served seven months duration deployment aboard USS Coral Sea (LHD-10) following Hurricane Katrina before being transferred ashore to New Orleans!
