Lake Station is a small town located in Union Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. The population was 461 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. Lake Station was founded in 1848 by George Wigglesworth and his family. The first post office at Lake Station was established in 1851. In 1870, the village of Lake Station was moved to its present location and the namewas changed to Lake Station Village. In 1925, the village of Oak Creek merged with Lake Station Village. The original residents of Lake Station were farmers who raised corn, wheat, soybeans, horses and dairy cows. By 1900, however, most of these crops had been replaced by other products such as automobiles and chemicals. The town's only industry until about 1950 was logging which continued until 1970 when it ended because of a lack of wood for fuel production and also because of competition from more efficient mills in nearby Terre Haute. One reason that Logging stopped may have been due to environmental changes caused by global warming; overgrazing on agricultural land has led to loss of topsoil which makes it difficult for trees to grow tall enough to provide lumber for buildings or homes. Lake Station is a small town in Harrison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1872 by Andrew J. Lake and his wife Emma. It was named for John Fenton, an early settler in this area. By 1900, the post office had been renamed Lake Station and the community had a population of about 100 people. In 1912, the railroad came to Lake Station and it grew rapidly with its new residents. By 1920, there were over 1,000 people living there and it was considered a prosperous community with a large grocery store and textile mill. The mill closed in 1984 but the grocery store continued to operate until it merged with another local business in 2009 to form First National Bank of Terre Haute Incorporated. In 1970, as part of larger changes throughout Harrison County related to broad regional trends such as changing industry or rural loss of businesses due to migration elsewhere (primarily Detroit), all but two families residing within miles of Lake Station voted to change their name from "Lake Station" to "(whatever)" when they did so on referendum ballots that year because they felt that "whatever" represented more diversity than just one name only associated with one type of business (a grocery store).
