The Lawrence, Indiana Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to 1863. The first organized military unit in the area was the 1st Regiment of Indiana Volunteers, which was activated on November 1, 1861. The regiment fought in the American Civil War and saw action at Gettysburg and other key battles. After the war ended, the regiment was disbanded. In 1865, an act of Congress authorized the creation of two infantry regiments in order to provide for militia service within Illinois (now Indiana) and Michigan Territory (now Ohio). These units were known as the 2nd and 3rd Infantry Regiments. The 2nd Infantry Regiment arrived in Lawrence on May 15, 1866. It was quickly converted into an artillery battalion and then served as part of District No. 4 under Brigadier General John Cranch Beauregard during Reconstruction in South Carolina. On July 9, 1876, an act of Congress authorized conversion of the 3rd Infantry Regiment into an infantry regiment with headquarters at Indianapolis and six battalions located at Decatur (now Terre Haute), Lafayette (now Lafayette), Terre Haute (now Evansville), Hammondsport (now Zenia),and Muncie (now Noblesville). This amendment created a brigade-sized army National Guard unit with a brigadier general commanding each battalion. On December 12, 1886, Headquarters Company became Headquarters Battalion; Company B became Company A; Company C became Company D; and Company E became Company F. The brigade sized organization helped support World War I by being used for training duty overseas before being assigned to combat duty in France on April 20th 1917 as part of Third Brigade Combat Team – 116th Infantry Division under Lieutenant General Pershing’s First Army Theaterof OPERATION JUPITER . In late 1918/early 1919 elements transferred from Third Brigade Combat Team – 116th Infantry Division to Ninth United States Reserve Corps where they reformed as part of second brigade Combat Team - 117th Infantry Division commanded by Major General John Mosely until next activation on October 25th 1920 when they were redesignated First Brigade Combat Team - 117th Infantry Division commanded by Major General Smedley Butler . -On January 6th 1921 an act authorizing reactivation of 3rd Battalion "Indiana" IRG at Decatur changed its name to "First Battalion "Indiana"" In 1947 another change took place when Headquarters & Headquarters Battery reorganized as Troop A & Troop B , Sniper Section becoming Scout Section & Signal Section also etc..
