The Marion National Guard was first called to service in 1917 during World War I. The unit was activated and mobilized for the war, but never served in action. In 1920, the Marion Volunteer Fire Department became part of the national Guard, and in 1922 the Marion County Sheriff’s Office joined as an armory detachment. The Marion National Guard was activated for a second time on November 1, 1942 when Army units were deployed to Europe during World War II. On April 6, 1945, the United States Armed Forces ended World War II with the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The National Guard returned home from overseas duty on September 2, 1945. On October 14, 1946 the Marion County Sheriff’s Office became an armory detachment again and on December 15th both organizations were re-designated as the Marion National Guardsmen (MNG). Marion, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Posey County, Indiana, United States. The population was 69,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Marion's foundation date back to 1824 when it was founded as a town by surveyors named Ewing and Green. In 1829, it became a village and in 1870 became an incorporated city. The name "Marion" originated from James Marion who settled there in 1799. By 1800, when President James K.
