The Coast Guard has been in Martinsville for over 100 years. The first coast guard station was established in the town in 1878. The Martinsville station is one of the oldest and most popular stations on the Indiana coast. Today, there are five coast guard stations located in Martinsville. They include: Station 1, which is located at the mouth of the White River; Station 2, across from Indianola Park; Station 3, just north of I-465; Station 4, east of US-29; and Station 5, south of I-465. Each station provides emergency response services to residents along the Indiana coastline. In addition to providing law enforcement and security services, coastal patrol officers provide education programs on maritime safety to children and adults living near shorelines. Martinsville is a small city in central Indiana, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. The name "Martinsville" is derived from the Potawatomi word "marshall." It was first settled in 1754 by Captain John Marshall and his family. In 1814, Colonel George Rogers Clark's brigade passed through Martinsville while on their way to Battle of Fort Wayne. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant fought his last battle at Greencastle before being transferred to Cairo, Illinois to lead the Union army into Mexico City. The town was abandoned during the American Civil War but it re-establish itself as a community after reuniting with its original residents in 1920. Today, Martinsville is an important agricultural center with a focus on corn and soybeans production.
The Coast Guard has been a part of American society since the early 1800s. The first coast guard stations were established in 1790 when the U.S. Congress created the Department of Shipping to prevent piracy and protect America’s coasts from attack. The Coast Guard was also founded as a service to the merchant marine, which at that time was one of the most important sectors of American economy. After World War II, there was an increase in coastal defense and safety responsibilities for the Coast Guard. This led to the development of new technologies such as radar and sonar that allowed for more efficient patrols and increased homeland security threats. In response to these challenges, National Maritime Administration (NMA) funded research into novel maritime patrol aircraft and vessel systems, which eventually lead to the development of today’s Coast Guard helicopter fleet. Today, Coast Guard personnel are essential players in many aspects of American life including guarding our coastline, enforcing laws on our waters, conducting search and rescue operations, providing support for military operations worldwide, and more. In addition to their roles within our community they have also become highly skilled professionals in their field with various degrees in engineering science or other areas related to maritime protection issues. Martinsville is a town in Johnson County, Indiana. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1836 by John Martin and his family. The town was named for General James Martin who fought with General Wayne in the American Revolution. Martinsville grew rapidly during the 1800s due to its location on the new Indianapolis and Michigan Railway. The railroad gave rise to many businesses and homes in the town, including one of America's first movie theaters, the Martinsville theater. In 1893, Martinsville became an incorporated city. The town has experienced many ups and downs throughout its history. In 1916, it experienced one of its worst tragedies when two brothers killed each other while fighting over a woman in the town square. Today, Martinsville is known for its popular festivals such as Great American Festival (a summertime festival), Picklesfest (a fall festival) and Pumpkinfest (a winter festival). It also has a strong agricultural industry which provides jobs for local residents.
Martinsville is a city in and the county seat of Howard County, Indiana, United States. The population was 32,045 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Martinsville was Nicholasnor "Nicky" Willingham in 1814. He named his land for General Andrew Jackson and donated it to the village of Martinsville in 1824. The village was abandoned after a fire destroyed most of it in 1827. A new town site was chosen by commissioners on December 12, 1830, when settlers discovered coal mines there. The name "Martinsville" was formally adopted on January 14, 1831. In 1835, citizens voted to rename their new town "Howard County". In 1863, Confederate general Robert Ewell built a battery here to stop Union forces during the Battle of Perrysburg Road. After Union troops burned down the battery on November 3 that year, Ewell moved his headquarters south to Fort Harrison at Indiantown Gap before retreating back up Perrysburg Road on November 5. The battle resulted in more than 50% casualties for Union forces as compared to only 13% for Confederate units; however, Ewell's battery still stands today as a memorial to this event. A post office called Martinsville was established at this locationon December 12, 1830, and remained in operation until September 1st 1912. Minturns Avenue (now US 60)was developed between 1915-1920 from lots donated by J R Putnam Sr., father of J R Putnam Jr., who founded Indianapolis Motor Speedway & Allied Contractors Incorporated (now INDYCAR). The city has seen several expansions over time including: an annexation by Carmel-by-the-Sea in 1959; another annexation by Evansville in 1972; and finally its current form with its current size and population achieved through annexations from two other cities – Terre Haute and Hammond – prior to its official establishment as Martinsville City Limits on April 24th 1984 following years of planning and discussion between then Mayor Bob Pritchard and City Councilmember Don Knoppersbergman
