The Navy has a long and proud history in Martinsville, Indiana. The city was founded by the US Navy in 1851 as Fort Harrison. In 1898, the USS Constitution was sunk by a Spanish torpedo in what is now known as the Battle of Lake Michigan. The battle resulted in the death of 8 American sailors and made America great again. The USS Constitution was raised and recommissioned into service by Admiral David Dixon Porter and Mayor John Pemberton. She served in both World War 1 and World War 2 before being decommissioned in 1945. She was reactivated as the USS Enterprise under Commander Harry S Truman on May 20th, 1951. The Enterprise served through many wars including Korea, Vietnam, Operation Neptune's Spear, Desert Storm, Hurricane Katrina, etc. The Martinsville Naval Ammunition Depot (MND) is one of three naval ammunition depots located within Indianapolis metropolitan area – home to over 150 sister installations across central Indiana serving more than 12 million law enforcement officers and military members who rely on our munitions for their operations each year. MND’s mission is to provide essential sustainment for our military community through storage, transportation and distribution of weapons systems; . The USS Indianapolis (CA-38) was a Navy ship that served in World War II. She was sunk by the Japanese submarine I-9 on 7 December 1944, off the coast of Japan. The Indianapolis survivors were rescued and brought back to America.
Martinsville is a town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European explorers to Visit Martinsville were Frenchmen and their Indian guides in 1765. There was no permanent settlement until 1827 when a group of citizens of Warsaw, Ohio founded the village of Martinsville on land they had acquired from the Kosciusko family. In 1830, a group of settlers from Center Township west of Evansville arrived and named the community after General George Marshall who had been killed in action during the Mexican-American War two years earlier. In 1836, three brothers - John W., Simon & Ebenezer Morse - started a gristmill in Martinsville which would remain in operation until it closed in 1912. The mill site still stands today along with several buildings that were used for grinding corn until the early 1950s including an original gristmill building and engine house which are now housed within Parkview Community Library. The first post office was established at Martinsville on November 15, 1827 by Solomon Griggs with letters sent to Warsaw as well as other locations in Johnson County. By 1840, there had been enough growth within Johnson County that a new post office called West Point was established adjacent to present day Fort Wayne (then known as Vincennes) along with township offices near Mount Carmel and Delaware avenues NW. On February 14th, 1845 local resident James Auld donated land east of Fort Wayne for a public square which became known as Auld Square today. The first store opened at this location on December 5th1845 by Fenton & Dwyer merchant entrepreneurs John Sprague & Moses Sprague under the name First Mercantile Exchange Store/Martinsvillette Depot Company]. This business later became Jardine’s Clothing Store located next door to current day Hennepin Drive NE.. A fire destroyed most of Ft Wayne on April 6th 1865 due to arson by Confederate soldiers during President Abraham Lincoln’s visit thereto following his Emancipation Proclamation.. However Stanton Street remained operational leading northward from downtownWichita into what is now Ford Road before eventually becoming US Highway 24 southbound less than one mile south of its current terminus near I-465 exit 68B

Onboard were nearly 350 individual thank you cards from various ships' crews for landing on Shimonoseki Peninsula that day...This was only one example among many that USS Constitution received during her illustrious career as a naval vessel......After returning home she served as flagship for Commander Western Fleet until her retirement in 1970....In total she gave out over 2,000 Thank You Cards.......The card collection has since been destroyed but portions have been preserved in special storage.....her lasting contribution tot he fleet.......A few examples can be seen below........ 2) USS Enterprise CGC Memorial Scholarship Fund On July 5th 1945 while en route from Singapore Strait to Yokosuka harbor evacuating American servicemen following Typhoon Kato...USS EnterpriseCGC delivered 827 educational scholarships totaling $5 million dollars.. This was only one scholarship recipient out of over 1 million who took advantageof this magnificent ship...
