Martinsville is a town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,220 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Martinsville were Andrew and Jacob Martin who arrived in 1786. In 1814, John Hartsfield founded Hartsfield & Company which became one of the largest paper companies in America. In 1865, J.C. Penney opened his first store in Martinsville and for many years it was the biggest store in town. The store closed its doors on December 26th, 1984 due to economic conditions within the local industry during that time period. The present day Martinsville community was formed when two families moved from nearby Whitefish Lake into Johnson County during the late 1800s to escape political instability back home in Europe where there were often revolutions and civil wars happening at any given time. The original settlers were Dutch-American farmers with a strong Protestant background who had fled religious persecution back home as well as conflicts between denominations across multiple countries during this era such as Ireland (where they had been persecuted), Prussia (where their ancestors had fought against Napoleonic France), Belgium (during World War I), Austria-Hungary (after WWI) and Germany (during WWII). After coming to America they quickly realized that they would not be able to survive living life among all these new people with different values and customs which led them to choose Martinsville as their new hometown instead of continuing down their wild goose chase lifestyle elsewhere throughout Johnson County looking for a place where they could live without fear of retribution or violence from their fellow natives- something that wasn't always easy or possible back then especially considering how close most people lived to each other hereabouts! Today'smartinsvilecommunity owes much of its existence to two families who made this small town what it is today-the Hatfields and McCoy’s respectively!

The first settlers to Martinsville were those who arrived on the "Ferguson" in 1786. The present-day town was founded in 1851 by John Martin and his wife Martha. The name of the town derived from an incident that took place there during the American Civil War. General Robert Ewell's Confederate army passed through Martinsville on their way to battle at Bull Run Bridge, and as they passed through, many citizens of the community came out to welcome them and offer any assistance they could provide. This act of kindness was so touching that General Ewell decided to give the community his home for Settlement purposes and renamed it Martinsville after Martha's husband, John Martin. The early years of Martinsville were very difficult because there were few resources available to support a small community. However, over time,through hard work and determination by its residents,Martinsville has developed into one of the most prosperous towns in central Indiana with a wide variety of businesses and cultural opportunities available to its residents
The first settlers in Martinsville were the Hanover brothers, who arrived in 1785. The following year, a group of men from Kentucky named John Marshall came to the area and started a store. The town was named after him because he donated land for the town. In 1825, two brothers by the name of Stephenson founded a grocery business at what is now Martinsville. One brother died during the business venture and his brother took over the business. The Stevensons continued to run it until 1907 when they sold it to Wm. Ewing Banneker and Company who operated it until 1922 when it became part of J C Penney Company.
