Merrillville is a small city in the U.S. state of Indiana, located in Hendricks County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 5,019. The city was founded by Nathan Merrill in 1814 as a trading post on the Chicago River. In 1824, it became one of the original ten townships in Indiana Territory and was renamed Merrillville after Nathan Merrill's father-in-law, Ebenezer Eliot. The first school in Merrillville was built in 1829 and the first store opened in 1830. The first courthouse was built in 1830 and served as the district court for Hendricks County until 1852 when it moved to Terre Haute,Indiana.
