The coast guard has been providing service to Mishawaka since 1876. The first coast guard station was established in Mishawaka, Indiana in 1876. The present-day coast guard station was built in 1966 and is located on the north bank of the White River. In 1978, the Coast Guard Station Mishawaka opened a facility that provides food and shelter for rescued whales and dolphins. In 1990, a new training terminal was constructed on the south bank of the White River. The current terminal building was completed in 1988 and is used for both training and operational purposes.

Mishawaka, Indiana is a small town located in central Indiana. The population was 7,183 at the 2010 census. Mishawaka is the county seat of Lake County and the home to Mishawaka University. The first white person to live in Mishawaka were two brothers, Isaac and Jacob Miller, who arrived in 1814. They founded a fur trading post on the banks of the White River. This post was known as "Mishawa." In 1836, they married Anna Maria Bidwell and moved to what is now Mishawaka. Anna Maria had been born in Greencastle, Kentucky and her parents were from Ohio. In 1837, they had their first child, Mary Ann Bidwell Miller. After purchasing land near present-day downtown Mishawaka in 1841, they named their new community after their daughter: AnnaMaria bidwell scissor town). The name stuck and has been used ever since for Mishwawa Township (now part of Lake County) and for AnnaMaria Bidwell School District (formerly Mishawa High School). Mishawaka attracted settlers because it had excellent soil quality for growing crops and timber; its location on high ground made it accessible by wagon road; its water availability was good; access to other townships through channels on the White River allowed trade between them; and its location near lakes helped facilitate transportation of goods. By 1800, many farmers had established themselves around Mishawaki due to these factors. In 1870–71 when Lake County was created from parts of Butler County,[1] much of what is now eastern Shiawassee Township became part of Nishatna Township while parts east of Lakeshore Road were annexed into Parkville Township.[2] As a result, most residents today living within boundaries that once belonged to Nishatna or Parkville Townships are descended from those who lived there during this time period - some even having attended school here before becoming residents elsewhere in central Indiana or out West.[3] In 1840s there were several stores open along White River which led to growth in business around town including: one store each by Abraham Day & Co., James Boggs & Co., Jno Henson & Sons (a millinery shop), Auld's Store (later renamed Griggs Clothing Company), Wm Pollard[4], Purdy's Store (owned by Ebenezer Purdy), D'Angelo's Grocery Store[5], Stevens' Restaurant[6], Shaver's Drug Store[7], Mrs Agnes Sanford House No 2,[8] Mrs Fannie Sanford House No 1,[9],[10]. These businesses served as types of check cashing places where goods could be bought and sold without going through local merchants face-to-face
