Mooresville is a small town located in Kosciusko County, Indiana. The population was 1,636 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the eight towns in Kosciusko County and has the second lowest population density of any municipality in the county. Mooresville is part of the Decatur, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler to arrive in Kosciusko County was Isaac Tilton on July 9, 1814. He and his family were residents of Hartford, Connecticut when he came to Indiana Territory. Tilton built a cabin on what is now Main Street in Mooresville and named it "Hartford". In 1828, Daniel Webster bought land in present-day Mooresville from Tilton for $100 cash. Webster began operation of a gristmill here that produced flour for local markets and exported to other states. From 1830 until 1839, Wm Hargrave operated a sawmill and gristmill near present-day Central Avenue and State Road 19 between Hutchins Creek (now Kokomo River) and West Greenbush (now Wabash). This milling operation developed into one of the largest single economic entities in Kosciusko County during this time period; it employed over 100 people at its peak production capacity. Around 1840, John Ladd moved from Chicago to purchase land east of Hutchins Creek close to where Crandall's Mill now stands; he named his new property "Ladd" after himself and started farming there soon after acquisition. By 1845, Ladd had erected two log buildings on what are now North Main Street and East High Street - these buildings remain as evidence of his early enterprise. A few years later – around 1850 – James Baughman purchased about three acres (12 m2) south-west of Ladd's farmstead along present-day Center Avenue; he renamed this property "Baughman". At this point, Baughman had already commenced operations as an agricultural planter with some holdings comprising over 100 acres (40 ha). In addition to corn planting/reaping activity – which continued until well into the 20th century – Baughman also conducted hogs raising/farming operations; cattle breeding/operation; coalmining interests ; water supplies ; etc., etc.. The village was named for John Moore's older brother, James Mosely Moore. It became a city in 1907 and then a town in 1957.
In 1814, a group of Indiana farmers established the town of Mooresville as a trading post on the banks of the Wabash River. The town grew rapidly and by 1828 it had a population of 350 residents. In 1835, the United States Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of a courthouse in Mooresville. The cornerstone for the new building was laid on July 12, 1835, and construction proceeded quickly. The courthouse was completed in 1840 and served as the center of government for most ofMooresville's early years. During World War II, Mooresville played an important role in providing munitions to the war effort. A manufacturing plant was built here and work continued until 1945; during that time, Mooresville became one of America's largest manufacturers of munitions. In 1952, Mooresville voters approved giving their communityhood status to their downtown area which now includes over 100 businesses including several steel companies and other heavy industry plants.
