Munster is a small city in southern Indiana, United States. The population was 7,782 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. Munster is on the south bank of the Muhlenberg River and is bordered by Lafayette to the east, Evansville to the west, and West Liberty Township to the north. The first permanent European settler in Munster were two brothers from Prague who built a log cabin on an island in the river in 1814. In 1827, three brothers from Ohio moved into Munster and started a tannery. A store opened in 1829 which became known as "The Store" because it was across from where Fort Dearborn now stands. By 1840, there were fifteen stores in town with one hundred residents and five churches. In 1846, Jonas Sutter established a farmstead near present-day downtown Munster and began growing corn, beans, peas and other crops for local markets. He also raised livestock until he sold his land to John Davenport in 1865 for $1 million dollars ($ when measured against today's prices). This event initiated what would become one of America's most important agricultural empires – that of John Davenport & Co., later JDS Group – which controlled more than seventy thousand acres (28 km2) of farmland throughout central Indiana during much of the 20th century. During World War II munitions production took center stage at nearby Indianapolis Naval Arsenal; munition plants operated out of Munster through 1945 despite nearby Indianapolis having no military significance whatsoever save for hosting civilian aircraft manufacturing facilities during that time period (the only other city within Hoosier state without any operational military installations). Today much industrial activity takes place within Downtown Indy – including heavy manufacturing such as auto parts and equipment; some light manufacturing such as plastics; energy production including coal mining operations; professional services such as law firms; while retail activity predominates around Government Center with smaller shops sprinkled throughout older neighborhoods like Old Town/Downtown/Lakeview etc.. There are several large commercial buildings along Wilson Road just south of I-65 but they are not residential or significantgentertainment buildings like those near Soldier Field or Bloomington Mall etc.. The old downtown has been greatly renovated although many historic buildings remain unaltered: notably Pogue Hall which served as both a courthouse (1867–1948) and library before being converted into apartments above it (2009); First National Bank (1871), Vincennes Woolen Mill #2 (1910), American Telephone & Telegraph Company Building (1912)….Many streets have been renamed after key figures associated with local industry: Gadsden Street for Julius Caesar Swartzendahl who founded Gadsden County Telephone Company [now Sprint]; Third Street NW for David Wittenberg [who founded Hendricks Manufacturing]….Many businesses have relocated or closed since 2000 due to economic recession: Alcoa Aluminum Plant relocated to Gary IN[2001], Bechtel Corp.-Purdue University Power Plant relocated to West Liberty Township[2002], Quicken Loans Inc.-First Notre Dame Cathedral objections rejected[2004], Lucas Oil Terminal -Indiana State Fairgrounds[2005]…..Most recently ITT Corporation’s corporate headquarters building adjacent to IUPUI campus had their occupancy terminated after 15 years because their lease expired……Munster HD DVD plant has continued operations even though its original location was mothballed due primarily to tax laws related thereto but also due largely to competition from manufacturers located further down I-465…..Priorities currently facing Downtown Indy include improving pedestrian safety crossing Wilson Rd between 3rd St./IUPUI Campus Blvd./Old Town Ave.; expanding vehicular access off Wilson Rd.; initiating development plans for Gadsden Park along Wilson Rd.;establishing new business districts around government center….
