In 1924, a group of businessmen pooled their money to purchase an old wharf on the riverfront that served as the nucleus for what would become Marine Gifts Incorporated. New Castle is a city in Delaware County, Indiana, United States. The population was 14,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. New Castle was founded in 1795 by Colonel John Campbell and his wife Deborah Laird Campbell as a small settlement on the east bank of the White River. The first post office in New Castle was established in 1801, and the first school was built in 1802. In 1803, New Castle became one of five townships within Delaware County and was named for its original founder, Colonel John Campbell. In 1830, three brothers-in-law (David Wertheimer, Jacob Wertheimer and Nicholas Just) purchased 4 acres (1 km²) of land near what is now downtown New Castle from David Johnston for $2 per acre. They began to build what would become known as "The Just House" which still stands today on North High Street between State Road 36 and Dayton Avenue. The Wertheimer brothers were also instrumental in developing what is now called Old Town New Castle into one of the most significant cultural attractions within Delaware County. In 1861, General David Butler moved his forces from Vincennes to newly constructed Fort Wayne to join Union troops fighting against Confederate forces during the American Civil War. Most important among these forces were artillery batteries under Major General Oliver Otis Howard that expanded into positions overlooking downtown New Castle from various hillsides on Georgian Square across from Fort Wayne's old arsenal buildings which remain today as part of IUPUI's Old Main University Building complex housing both undergraduate and graduate faculties including arts & humanities programs along with several research institutes including those affiliated with Purdue University - all located within walking distance of each other on richly ornamented Brown Street between Fifth Avenue and Chestnut Street close to Butler Park; essentially surrounded by fashionable residential neighborhoods filled with fine art galleries/ Orchestras etc., making it one of only a few military strongholds remaining open until after World War II outside major cities such as Washington D.C., Okinawa etc... One notable feature about this fortuitous location relative to later urban growth pattern; since many soldiers were released or discharged here before joining their families back home during peacetime years living 'off base' less exposed'; something that effectively kept this bastion against Indian raids relatively unscathed through much OFA activity conducted herein even up until late 1800s when very few live examples remain extant!
