In 1795, Dutch traders discovered Java and started trading with the local people for coffee. They also introduced new methods of roasting and grinding the coffee so that it would be more consistent with European style cups of tea. By 1800, most of Java had become under Dutch control, including Coffee Plantations such as Java Sea Coast (now Indonesia). With the growth of British imperialism throughout Southeast Asia during this time period, Dutch coffee smuggling increased significantly. One result was thatJava lost its status as an important global node for coffee trade and production until 1815 when the Dutch East Indies Company (NEO) became dominant over both Dutch traders and their Indonesian partners in Java Sea Coast.
