The Noblesville, Indiana Coast Guard Station has been providing law enforcement and emergency services to the community since 1922. The station is home to a variety of Coast Guard assets including a helicopter, boat, and plane. In 1992, the station was renamed in honor of Rear Admiral John W. Fetterman who served as Commandant of the Coast Guard from 1979-1992. Rear Admiral Fetterman was instrumental in developing and expanding the Coast Guard's mission in Noblesville. He also recognize the importance of maritime security and initiated many important initiatives such asestablishing a port authority for Noblesville and creating a marine patrol squadron which patrols Lake Michigan. In 1984, the station received its first jet ski when it purchased an ASR-1A from Grumman Corporation. The Jet Ski Squadron has since become one of the most popular units at the station with their use range from local fishing tournaments to full-fledged searches for missing persons. In addition to their jet skiing capabilities, the Station also operates two boats; an 8’ aluminum catboat named "Piney" and a 12’ fiberglass boat named "Liz". These vessels are used for boating, fishing, search & rescue missions as well as investigates any suspicious activity on or around Lake Michigan shorelines. Since 1990, when Petty Officer First Class John Jansen became commanding officer of Unit 5 (Maritime Patrol), nearly every major event that occurs at or near Noblesville's coast guard stations have been coordinated through this unit alone - something that only began to be possible after John Jansen's retirement in 2003. Under Petty Officer First Class Jansen's leadership Unit 5 became known as "the go-to team" for events anywhere along Lake Michigan Shoreline due to his experience conducting specialized SAR operations both ashore and afloat during his tenure as CO5MPS! In recent years Unit 5 has transitioned into becoming more than just a coast guard detachment responsible for patrolling specific areas within our boundaries - they've become integral members of various city/state law enforcement teams working together supportively during high crimes or emergencies! As part of this cooperative effort Unit 5 is currently operating two stateofthedog helicopters (HV2s) providing coverage over downtown Indianapolis while they undergo annual maintenance; additional HV2s will be added in early 2017."
