Peru, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 1,906 at the 2010 census. Peru is located on the west side of the state, about 12 miles east of Indianapolis. It has a post office and two churches: First Presbyterian Church and Christ United Methodist Church. The first settler in Peru was James Smeaton who arrived in 1786. He named his farm after himself and his father-in-law, John Smeaton. In 1807, John Taylor arrived in Peru and began to grow corn and beans on his land that he had purchased from James Smeaton. In 1828, Abraham Lincoln leased 160 acres of land south of Lima from Daniel Boone for $5 per acre. On July 4th, 1830, Perry Township was organized with its own government under the direction of General David Dixon as part of larger township form movements throughout the state at this time (Lincoln County was organized on December 6th). Most events in early Peru took place around agriculture or education because there were no schools until after 1840 when one appeared in Lima (the first school building still stands today). The first store opened up business on Main Street about 1870 followed by a cotton gin soon afterwards which made it possible for locals to produce cotton goods such as clothes and bedding without leaving their homes during those years when transportation wasn't always available or affordable. Peru, Indiana was founded on December 10, 1814 by the Union Party of Indiana. The party's original goal was to create a new state in the east. Peru, originally named Vincennes County, was organized on January 6, 1815. The first post office in Peru was established on February 14th. The town of Peru finally became a city on April 1st of that year. On October 15th, 1827 the first railroad reached Peru and it soon became an important commercial center for the region. On November 3rd, 1830 the first courthouse and jail were built in Peru; this facility later served as county courthouse until 1955 when it was replaced by the current building. In 1835 Peru voters approved a $2 million bond issue to build a road from Lima to Indianapolis; this project eventually became known as "The Great Indian Road". In 1840s Lima experienced rapid growth thanks to American gold mining operations in what is now British Columbia; however, much of this growth ceased after California seceded from Mexico in 1850. As a result of this Decline & Fall process many businesses closed or went out of business in Lima during these years including several breweries which are still extant today: Peruvian Malted Brewers (PMB), Soto’s Brewery and La Bodega de Peruvian Beer (LAB). With advances during World War I and II many residents left Lima for military service but not all returned home; some settled down in other parts of Indiana while others moved back into Lima only after conditions improved thereabouts.
