Plymouth is a city in and the county seat of Plymouth County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 484. The town was founded on November 3, 1824 by Alexander McGowan and his wife Mary Phelps. The first post office opened in Plymouth on December 12, 1825. The name "Plymouth" first came into use in 1830 when General James K. Polk took possession of land east of the Mississippi River for what would become Illinois. In 1836, Captain John Coyle set up a store and trading post at the mouth of the Great Miami River in present-day Plymouth Township to serve as a port for goods moving westward from Missouri through Illinois and Iowa to points north. A new courthouse was built in Plymouth in1849–50 by architect George Biddle Jr., who also designed many other buildings in that town during its early years including two hotels which remain standing today – one known as "The Good Hope" and the other as "The Queen". A steamboat called "The Pilgrim" made its maiden voyage from Portsmouth, England on October 15, 1847 bound for Cincinnati with 121 passengers aboard; it wasthe first steamship ever to cross the Atlantic Ocean alone! On July 14th 1870, citizens of Plymouth gathered at High Street Presbyterian Church (later First Presbyterian) to celebrate America's centennial year; President Ulysses S Grant attended that service along with representatives from twenty-six states who were then represented at Buffalo Niagara Falls! In 1953, following passage of Act No. 715 entitled "An act concerning schools", Plympton Academy—one of only three high school institutions accredited by Northwest Indiana State Teachers Association (now National Education Association)—was established within Plymouth Consolidated School District #2 based on recommendations made by a committee chaired by Mrs. Lillie Jephcott Mewhinney.
