Plymouth is a town in Posey County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Kokomo, IN-4 zip code. In 1812 Plymouth was chosen as the new site for a U.S. military post because it had good soil and timber resources that could be used to build fortifications against Native Americans. The first post office was established in Plymouth on November 15, 1812 by Major General James Kieft with only 10 residents in attendance. The post office moved to its present location in 1816 after being relocated from nearby Vincennes Post Office. The town's growth began with the construction of the Miami Canal in 1830 which connected the Ohio River to Lake Michigan through Plymouth and other small towns along its route. This canal helped create a strong agricultural base around which many businesses were built and stimulated development throughout the late 19th century and early 20th century; however, heavy industry failed to take hold until World War II when General Motors started manufacturing here at their plant known as GMC (later Ford). In 1925, Plymouth became one of several towns merged into Kokomo Municipal Airport after Kokomo withdrew from competing for control of Terre Haute Municipal Airport; Kokomo would eventually annex Plymouth in 1956. Today, much of downtown Plymouth remains an isolated commercial area while most residential areas are now occupied by middle-class families who have suburbanized what once constituted rural living patterns within city limits. One major impetus behind this change has been Judge Harry Sanger's efforts over many years to promote open space within city limits which has led to increased public investment and support for community amenities such as libraries and parks; these investments have also helped preserve historic buildings such as Representative John Sprague's home on Main Street while creating new business districts Downtown that accommodate larger populations without having their older neighborhoods destroyed or lost access to essential services (e.g., schools).
