The history of artisan coffee in Portage, Indiana can be traced back to the early 1800s. The first coffeehouses in the town were started by Italian immigrants in the mid-1800s. These coffeehouses would serve Italian espresso drinks and specialty coffees such as roasts andasian blends. By the late 1800s, however, German immigrants had moved into the town and began to open their own cafes. In 1905, the first portage café was opened on Main Street. This café served German-style coffee with local bread products and pastries. From here, Portage gradually became known as a center forartisan coffee flavorings and production. In 1959, Jörg Kapp founded his own company, Kapp's Coffee Company, which is still in operation today. In 1847, John H. White started the first small coffee shop in Portage,Indiana. The business would continue to operate until it was destroyed by fire in 1951. In 1946, Don and Marilyn Stephenson opened the second shop in town. The Stephenson's Store would continue to be open until it closed in 1984. In 1957, Dick & Diane Pritzker opened their third store in town. This store would continue to be open until it closed in 1992
Portage, Indiana is a small town in the northwest corner of Indiana. It was founded in 1824 and lies on the Portage River. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Founded by Methodist missionaries, the town became an important transportation center for settlers coming west from Ohio and Kentucky. In 1827 it was attacked by Indians, but was quickly fortified and considered safe. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s, thanks to its location on the river between two large settlements—Hemcyrria to the east and Terre Haute to the west—and its access to timber and trade goods. By 1850 Portage had become one of the largest settlements in Northwest Indiana. The Panic of 1837 led to a decline in business activity in Portage during that year's economic depression. However, by 1840 things were improving thanks to a new railroad connection with Chicago that made goods available more cheaply than they had been before. This trend continued into the 1850s, when industry began expanding again and portages became increasingly used as shipping points for commodities such as wheat, pork products, cottonseed oil, coal dust etc.. During this time also came changes in society which affected Portage: due to increasing social unrest throughout much of America at this time there were frequent uprisings against tyranny (the Creek War being one such event). In response to these events many residents fled northward towards Canada or westward into Missouri during this period; however some did remain behind until after Indian Removal began in 1845%. By 1860 only about 50% of present-day Portage resident remained from those who had moved away during that period; most of those remaining lived within what is now Dearborn County. Over time other nearby communities gradually gained importance (such as Terre Haute) while Portage slowly lost its status as an important commercial center due largely to farming activities which replaced manufacturing interests at this time.
