Everytown for Gun Safety, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that aims to prevent gun violence in the United States by working to promote responsible firearm ownership and distribution. Everytown was founded in 1995 by two major Portage, Indiana, businesses: The Chamber of Commerce and the Pro-Firearm Committee. In 2007, Everytown partnered with the National Rifle Association (NRA) to help create the first national firearms education program for middle and high school students. The NRA’s “Guns of America” exhibit (now closed) was located on the second floor of the old Courthouse Annex in downtown Portage until it closed in 2001 due to budget cuts. The following year saw another donation when James Burch donated four rifle cartridges as part of his agreement with Mayor John Cooksey that all men over 21 years old must have at least one shot fired off each season while hunting within 100 yards of their home or barn (the cartridge limit increased from 2 rounds per day per hunter up to 10 rounds per day). Cooksey also agreed not to charge landowners any license fees for allowing hunters access inside their homes (a policy still in effect today). .pdf Dennis Dolan contributed five shotguns – three pump action shotguns and two bolt action shotguns – towards arming local law enforcement officers starting in 1976 (.pdf). This was part of Dolan’s effort “to make sure our community could protect itself if something ever happened bad out there [in] those woods outside our limits” (.pdf). Dolan also contributed $2,500 towards pistols which were then given out free along with ammunition at county fairs/.pdf

Portage, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state ofIndiana and the county seat of Portage County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,362. The city's estimated population for 2019 is 18,681. The portage bridge that spans the White River crossing into Michigan is one of America's most famous tourist attractions and has been visited by many presidents and business people. The White River also flows through town providing drinking water to local farms as well as creating a large body of water for fishing and rowing operations on its lower course. Portage was platted in 1824 by Nicholas Cadman from Michigan Territory when he planned to move his family westward after being expelled from what had become Ohio Territory following the Northwest Indian War (1814-1815). Cadman named his new town after General David Porter who led American forces against Native Americans at Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1812 near present day Detroit. In 1830, Peter Sellers founded a grist mill on current day Market Street in downtown Portage while still living in Wayne County; it continues to be run today by Sellers heirs as an agricultural producer/distributor with sales offices located throughout northwestern Indiana including portions of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Portage is a town in Wayne County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1835 by farmers of the Mississippian culture and named for General James Wilkinson. The community grew rapidly after the railroad arrived in 1868, and by 1910 it had become one of the largest towns in Wayne County. In 1930, Portage became part of neighboring Warren Township; however, the town charter continued to be held by its original founders until 1971. In that year, residents voted to change their name toPortage Township. The city of Indianapolis was founded on what is now Southport Avenue in 1836 by a group of entrepreneurs led by Colonel John Prentice as a way to encourage investment into the area's fertile lowlands. The early years were difficult for both cities because they depended on each other for food and transportation; but when railroads arrived in earnest, trade gradually increased between Indianapolis and Portage.* By 1870, both cities had surpassed each other in population size and significance; but while Indianapolis grew wealthier through annexations and mergers with surrounding townships*, Portage saw little benefit from this growth until after World War I when organized religion began to take hold as an important factor among local businessmen* In 1924–25*, during Roosevelt's New Deal program*, much progress was made towards improving public health conditions within Portage* However * post-war economic decline has led to declines in job opportunities* Although there are some efforts underway to revive manufacturing activity within local businesses*, recent decades have seen a decrease in property values and social fabric within parts of town*
The first European to explore the area now known as Portage was a French explorer, Pierre-Etienne de la Salle, in 1679. The area had been explored by the Shawnee and Huron people for many years before that. In 1795, the Indiana Territory was organized from part of the Michigan Territory. In 1813, the territory was divided into two parts, with Indiana becoming a part of the Northwest Territory. In 1818, an act provided for a territorial government within Indiana specifically. On July 5, 1819, this government was dissolved and replaced by a state government under Governor Nicholas Petoskey.
