Richmond, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Clark County. The population was 73,567 at the 2010 census, making it the sixth-largest city in Hoosier County. Richmond is located on the Ohio River just east of Indianapolis and north of Evansville. The first European to see Richmond was a Frenchman named Pierre de la Salle in 1690 when he landed his ship, La Salle's Discovery, on what is now called Pointe Royal Beach near present-day Richmond. He noted that there were "a great many huts" and "a good many people." In 1701, General David Wilkinson marched his army upriver from Fort Dearborn opposite present-day Lafayette to take possession of land grants along the Ohio River for France. Wilkinson had been sent by British Prime Minister William Pitt as part of an effort to open up new territory for settlement after victories over Native American groups at Pontiac and Fallen Timbers Lakes near Detroit. When he arrived in Indianapolis in 1705, Wilkinson found that land grants were being issued instead for areas such as Noblesville and Westfield south of Fort Wayne (later Elkhart). In 1800, Colonel John Smith founded Richmond because he believed that it would be an important stop on the Underground Railroad during its travels between Illinois and Kentucky pass through central Indiana.
