Richmond, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Huntington County, Indiana. The population was 86,012 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. It has been settlement since 1814 when Miamis led by David Ritchie established the site on land donated by Nicholas Long. Richmond was founded as a log cabin community named after General Robert E. Lee's birthplace in Virginia. In 1828, Richmond became an unincorporated community when it consolidated with other villages built around it to form what would become Huntington County. The first brick courthouse in Indiana sat on Main Street for only a year before being destroyed in a fire; its replacement was completed in 1831 and remains standing today. The first post office called Richmond opened on November 12, 1830, and served residents of the village until February 4th of that year when it became part of Huntington County. In 1840, Stephenson erected his sawmill just south of town on White River where now stands the Stevenson Museum Complex located across from main street on Randolph Road (now known as Livingston Avenue). This mill helped create one of downtown's earliest neighborhoods with large homes surrounding slender millsrace running through it which remain extant to this day (and are included within walking distance of many downtown businesses). Richmond grew rapidly during the American Civil War as thousands residents sided with Union forces over Confederate sympathizers; however, most people returned home once hostilities ended and Reconstruction began in 1865. Richmond, Indiana was founded in 1812 and has been a part of the United States of America since it was granted its current status as an incorporated city by the US Constitution in 1871. The city is located on the southern bank of the Ohio River, about 22 miles northeast of Indianapolis. Richmond became a city on February 14, 1861, following the Virginia General Assembly's passage of a resolution proclaiming that all citizens of Confederate States (the Confederacy) were to be treated equally under the law. The ordinance designated Richmond as "the capital" of Confederate Indiana. In 1865, after Union troops captured Petersburg and sacked much of downtown Richmond during the Siege of Petersburg, Confederate General Robert E. Lee ordered his entire command to retreat southward to Hatcher's Run Cemetery along Virginia Avenue in central Richmond. Although some men continued to fight until they were killed or wounded, most Confederate officers and soldiers surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865. Less than two weeks later, on April 15th 1865, Confederate General James Longstreet ordered his army around Petersburg Peninsula into withdrawal across Appomattox River towards Atlanta. As night fell on April 16th 1865 near present-day Monroe County line in southeastern Virginia Additional Federal forces arrived to drive out remaining Confederates including many high-ranking officers and men who had refused parole or capitulated without surrendering their arms or property. Aftermath: More than three thousand civilians were killed during the siege; one hundred thousandmilitary personnel lost their lives; more than fifty million dollars worthof goods and equipment were destroyed or damaged;and over 1 million people were forced from their homes within five months following hostilities ceased
