Schererville, Indiana is a small town in southwestern Indiana, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of St. Joseph County. The name "Schererville" is derived from German immigrants who settled there in 1837. The first post office for Schererville was established in 1846. The community first developed as a Methodist Episcopal church settlement, with the first pastor being Rev. John Brougham. In 1870, Schererville became the site of an agricultural fair which attracted attention from easterners who were visiting central and southernIndiana during that time period to inspect new land developments and see if they would invest money in such ventures. In 1884, Schererville incorporated as a village under the name of "New Salem". That year saw its biggest event yet - Iowa's Govt sent soldiers to protect local farmers against a trainload of mail order brides arriving from Iowa City for their wedding season celebrations on Septembers 15-17th . A very large crowd turned out to watch as General Pershing led his unit around town on horseback while some 21 cannons broke loose and fired into the air! Although New Salem had been organized bylaws within two years of incorporation, it never managed to gain much popularity due largely to its lack of infrastructure such as a bank or churches (the only ones built until after World War II). However, thanks tohorizontal growth and annexation by other nearby villages over time (most notably Westfield), New Salem slowly regained some lost ground throughout most of the 20th century before finally disappearing completely by 2000 when all but one building within its boundaries were demolished during renovations associated with riverfront redevelopment plans in that area.. Despite this shortcoming however, SchererVILLE has experienced several periods where it achieved high levels of commerce and activity including: 1970s-1990s: Most notably during this time period new industry started emerging such as manufacturing/otech businesses; this followed along with increased suburban development around town which created more demand for services provided by municipal officials like public works etc.; also many factories closed down throughout these years creating job losses among those impacted 2005-present: One major trend seen over this past decade has been an increasing number of retirements resulting in smaller populations living near downtown cores; furthermore commercial properties have become available closer to I-465 so commuters can reach jobs quickly ; although there are still some active businesses functioning locally these days
