Seymour, Indiana is a small town located in the state of Indiana. The population was 5,612 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Seymour was founded in 1868 and incorporated as a city in 1907. The city was named for General Oliver Otis Seymour who fought in the American Revolution. In 1925, it merged with Terre Haute to form one large city. Today, Seymour is known for its manufacturing base which includes steel processing and engineering companies such as PTC Group and Phelps Dodge Corporation. The area that now makes up Seymour was first settled by pioneers in 1868 when they arrived from Ohio with their families. The first post office was established in 1824 and the first store opened in 1830. The population of Seymour grew rapidly during the 19th century, reaching 10,000 by 1850. It became an important agricultural center and produced corn, wheat, cotton, potatoes, apples and other crops. In 1871 the town was merged with neighboring Vandalia to form the new city of Seymour. During its early years Seymour had no school system and children attended local churches until they were old enough to attend public schools. In 1903 Seymour consolidated its two primary schools into one school district which continues to operate today. The growth of Seymour has led to numerous development projects including a new library (opened in 1935), a new water tower (opened in 1955), a new gymnasium (opened in 1957), and a brand new community hall (opened in 1978).
Seymour was one of the original settlements in the area that would become Indiana. It was founded by Joshua Seymour and his wife, Rachel, on November 3, 1785. They named their settlement after Sir Henry Seymour, 1st Baronet of Sutton Coldfield. The first settler in the town was Isaac Norris. In 1814, David Sills settled in the town and it became a part of Posey County. On December 12, 1821, Seymour were merged into Howard Township.
