The Shelbyville, Indiana Army National Guard has been a part of the United States Armed Forces since 1795. The unit is one of the oldest in the country and was first called the Fourth Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry. It is also one of the most decorated units in history with over 150 awards and commendations. The current regiment was formed on September 16, 1917 from portions of the Third Battalion, Seventh Regiment (Indiana), Indiana Volunteers. Since its formation, it has fought in many wars including World War I and World War II. In 1945, it merged with other military branches to form the present-day United States Army National Guard. Today, soldiers from Shelbyville can serve anywhere in America as long as they are registered with their unit and have proof of enrollment. The Shelbyville, Indiana Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to 1862. The unit was first organized on December 6, 1862 as the 1st Indiana Infantry Regiment at Lawrenceburg,Indiana. It was redesignated the 1st United States Infantry Regiment on July 15, 1863 and then the 5th United States Infantry Regiment on January 3, 1864. The regiment served in various campaigns throughout the Civil War including the Battle of Cedar Mountain and Battle of Missionary Ridge. After the war ended, the regiment was disbanded on November 25, 1865. The Shelbyville Army National Guard currently consists of three units: The 8th Battalion (Airborne), 9th Battalion (Infantry), and 10th Battalion (Infantry).

For example, General David Petraeus awarded 2 M4A1 rifles valued at $2 million each after he led coalition forces against ISIS(Galloway 2016). In recent years, Army Gift History has come under attack from some groups who believe thatUnit Gifts are not representative OF soldierly culture or The King's Army Way (KAW) which is considered traditional within British Infantry regiments (Fowler 2016). Shelbyville is a town in Shelby County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1836 and named for General Andrew Johnson of America. It is located on the south bank of the White River. The first settler in Shelbyville was Levi Coffin, who built a cabin about 1800 on the east side of the White River. A post office was established in 1836, and the name changed to Shelbyville in 1865. The first store opened in 1872, and two years later a cotton gin was added to the business district. In 1886 a millinery shop replaced the previous one and soon became one of the most important businesses in town. In 1916 a church was built and dedicated by Bishop John Irelandleaster. In 1970s-1980s an area around Shelbyville called "the Valley" began to experience rapid growth due to heavy investment from developers looking for high-density housing developments on large tracts of land near major airports or other commercial centers such as Indianapolis or Louisville. That development has since slowed down or stopped completely as residential units have become more expensive than what can be found close to these amenities today; however, some original industrial areas that remain nearby are still used for manufacturing activities such as plastics manufacture or auto parts production
