Shelbyville is a small town in Northwest Indiana, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Provo, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Shelbyville were French traders and missionaries in the mid-1700s. In 1785, the British built Fort Dearborn on the east side of present-day Shelbyville after their victory over France in the Seven Years' War. The fort served as a base for Indian attacks on both sides of the border and as aώσεις for military campaigns against Native Americans. The town was founded by James Shelby in 1827 when he took over management of an estate along with his brother Johnnie. By 1830, about 100 people lived in what is now downtown Shelbyville; farming and ranching were still major economic activities.
