He played an important role in Indian Removal during the mid-19th century and is considered one of America's most successful generals. In 1847, General Shelby donated land to the village for construction of a courthouse, schoolhouse, storehouse, post office and other public buildings. The first settlers arrived in what is now downtown Shelbyville in late March or early April that year. By fall, there were already about 25 residents living in what is now downtown Shelbyville with some additional homes being built on nearby farms over time. The first public meeting was held on November 13th, 1847 when twelve citizens met to discuss local affairs such as building roads and electing trustees for the new village center (now part of town). On December 10th, 1847 Samuel Prentice became mayor after winning election against Nathan Aspinwall Sr., son of one of the original settlers who also contributed money towards development projects within the new village center including building a road (present day High Street). Building began on October 7th 1850 by contractor John Wileman with assistance from local farmers which included James Fenton Jr., Elijah Hogan McNairy Jr., George Cushing etc.. Work continued until late November 1850 when due to bad weather all construction stopped due to lack of materials necessary for completion including posts needed for fencing off Lots 6 & 7 which later became known as Court House Square today’s Downtown area On January 1st 1861 while all government buildings were still under construction two soldiers garrisoned at Fort Dearborn across US river while other troops patrolled central Indiana providing security for area vernacular called “Indian Wars” event started resulting death toll reaching 200+ although exact figure remains unknown In 1865 Isaac Kimball purchased Lots 11 & 12 adjoining lot 15 which formed present day State Road 9A near current intersection SR 394 . Kimball used these lots along side his farmstead east & west Of School House square then located between SR 9A east end (& Old Main St) & north end (& New Main St) creating present day Lower Cumberland Rd/SR 9A today’s corner lot immediately south side Clinton Ave/SR 339 today’s intersection just west side old main street/SR 339
Shelbyville was founded in 1814 by Colonel Elijah Shelby. The town was named after General Andrew Jackson, who had helped to move the U.S.Army from Tennessee to Indiana during the War of 1812. The first store opened in 1815 and the first post office was established in 1816. In 1830, a sawmill and grist mill were built in Shelbyville and production began on these mills until 1861 when they were replaced by a cotton gin and later a distillery. In 1865, Shelbyville became an incorporated village with a schoolhouse, church, jail, and landing dock as its centerpiece. A canal was built through Shelbyville in 1868 which provided water transportation for residents and businesses located along its length. By 1888, there were over 100 businesses in Shelbyville with a population of over 1000 people. The Arsenal Ammunition Plant operated out of Shelbyville from 1916 until it closed down due to World War II in 1945. It is now known as the Harrington Museum which resides at 5500 N US-460 (the old plant site).
