Speedway is a small town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,695 at the 2010 census. Speedway is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the eastern edge of Butler County and north of Terre Haute. The first permanent settler in what would become Speedway was David Witherspoon in 1824. He built a cabin on the east side of the street that becomes Speedway Boulevard today. The town started as a stop on the Binghamton and Western Railroad and became an important transportation center for central Indiana during the early 20th century; it served as both a commercial center and a training ground for American drivers. In 1928, General Motors—the parent company of Chevrolet—founded its own factory in nearby Goshen to produce Chevrolets for sale throughout central Indiana; this made Speedway one of GM's main production locations. In 1933, when National Broadcasting Company (NBC) purchased control of Monmouth Broadcasting Company (MBC), MBC merged with NBC to form NBC-TV (later CNBC). This led to increased broadcasting activity in Speedway, which included live programming from NASCAR events as well as studio coverage of local high school football games and other popular sports events. During World War II, Speedway played host to numerous military encampments used by American troops stationed in India; these encampments were sometimes known locally as "Camp Speedway." After hostilities ended in 1945, many wartime veteran families returned to Speedway and began rebuilding their homes; this helped rebuild speedway's economy after years of neglect during World War II. In 1951, General Motors merged with Chrysler Corporation; this gave rise to two dominant car manufacturers in central Indiana: Dodge and Plymouth Products Incorporated (Plymouth). Plymouth eventually left Indy behind and outsourced most production operations at speedway to Dodge plants outside of Indy while continuing some day-to-day operations here until 1994 when they closed all their plants except one—now called Vandalia Raceway—and sold their assets back into GM ownership. 2

Speedway is located in Madison County, Indiana and was founded in 1908 by the Chicago, Cleveland, and Indianapolis Railway. The track opened on October 15th of that year and became the first commercially successful speedway in the United States. The track was originally built for racing horses and has been used for a variety of other events throughout its history. In 1956, Speedway underwent an extensive renovation which added new seating, a grandstand, and a fireworks display. The renovation also made several changes to the racing schedule which has kept the track operational over the years. On July 20, 1892, Speedway was officially opened to the public. The track was located on a piece of property that had been donated by Andrew Mellon. The first race was held on October 1st and it featured a race between two teams of horses. In 1923, Speedway added a second course for auto races which helped make it one of the biggest tracks in the United States. The new stadium hosted its first football game in 1971 while also hosting its first baseball game in 1973. It also served as the home field for the Indiana Pacers (now known as the Indiana Pacers) during their time as an affiliate of The Boston Red Sox. In 2001, Speedway merged with Indianapolis Motor Speedway which made it one of only six sports venues to have both professional leagues play at their same facility (the others being Madison Square Garden, Oracle Arena, PNC Park, Yankee Stadium and Wrigley Field). In addition to professional sporting events, Speedway has also been used for concerts by artists like Aerosmith and Metallica among others.
