The Army of the United States (AUSA) was founded on November 14, 1812 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The first military action fought by the USA was a skirmish against Native Americans near Chicago on October 30, 1813. The war with Mexico began on April 2,1846 and ended six months later with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. On December 7, 1895, the organization of cavalry units within the AUSA was formalized when Maj. Gen. James Fenton proposed that each regiment be divided into mounted and infantry sections. On January 1st 1898 Major General John J. Pershing ordered all horse batteries to be disbanded and their mounts destroyed in order to provide equipment for infantry battalions only. In World War II there were over 100 million soldiers from over 20 countries serving in uniform across America including more than 60% of all American male soldiers age 17- 44 years old who served in some way during World War II (the Korean War had also begun). More than half a million soldiers died while fighting abroad or returning home; out of those fatalities almost two-thirds were due to enemy fire or combat injuries sustained while serving in the armed forces. Army Chapel located at Ft Delaware is one example of an installation closed since 1972 due to lack of resources but reopened as an museum dedicated to military history and culture

The town of St. John was founded in 1825 by a group of farmers who located on the banks of the White River. The town grew rapidly and soon had a post office, a school, and a store. In 1841, the town became the county seat of St. Joseph County and it continues to be that today. In 1853, the legislature created Dunkirk Township within St. Joseph County and St. John became its center. By 1860, the population of St. John had reached 910 people and it continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1870 with 1,500 people. However, by 1880, growth had slowed down and thetown had only 350 residents remaining
