Vincennes, Indiana is a community in the U.S. state ofIndiana and is part of the Vincennes, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 21,953 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Indianapolis–Cincinnati– Dayton Combined Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Vincennes was French explorer Captain Jacques Marquette in 1788. He named it after Pierre-André VINCENNES, Sieur de La Salle's adjutant general on his expedition from Quebec to Lake Superior in 1679-1682 which explored that area and discovered water routes to the East Indies and Canada. When France lost control of North America during the American Revolution, British forces took over for France and renamed Vincennes "New France". In 1792, Great Britain transferred ownership of Canada back to France after its victory in the Revolutionary War. The town became a part of Indiana as part of that state's new western division on November 3, 1821 when Kentucky became a part of Indiana Territory along with all other Indian reservations east of Ohio River. In 1828, entrepreneur James KNOTT built a iron works at Vincennes while still living near Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania which became one of the largest employers in Fort Wayne until closed down by bankruptcy in 1895; it also produced locomotives for thesectional trains between Indianapolis and Chicago/Milwaukee via two track tunnel under I-65 (now known as I-69) northbound and southbound at exit 349A (the current day White Castle). This company made use local blacksmiths who turned out high quality locomotives with steel frames using hand forging techniques similar to those used today by heavy railroads such as Amtrak's Northeast Wine Train or Canadian Pacific Railway's Alberta Limited services between Toronto and Edmonton/Edmonton Airport/. The Vincennes community was founded in 1814 by General Anthony Wayne and his wife, Judith. The town began as a small cabin settlement on the east bank of the Illinois River. In 1827, General Anthony Wayne built the first school in Vincennes. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s, thanks to its location on the frontier and its trade with neighboring communities such as Moline and Terre Haute. In 1846, Vincennes became an incorporated city.In 1862, following the American Civil War, Vincennes was sacked by Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant. Although many buildings were destroyed, the population managed to rebuild quickly. By 1870, Vincenne had reached its peak population of around 507 citizens. However, due to economic difficulties and a lack of transportation options, the city declined over the next few decades until it bottomed out in 1925 at around 335 residents.
