One of the earliest such establishments was The Sailors’ Exchange. This store sold both maritime-related items and souvenirs related to the navy and its ships. In addition, The Sailors’ Exchange offered lessons in seamanship from experienced sailors. The next significant business venture started by Mr. Edward Grier was The Mariners’ Store. This store did not sell any type of marine supplies but rather sold Maritime memorabilia, including ship models and paintings. However, The Mariners’ Store also received a lot of criticism for selling items that were not actually related to maritime history or culture. Nevertheless, this store managed to stay open until around 1915! In response to these growing retail outlets, Mr. John Bigham set up his own shop called The Boatshed in 1916. At The Boatshed, customers could buy all types of boat accessories and parts as well as tickets for sea voyages! Because this business was new, it faced some initial challenges but eventually attained success! It wasn't until 1949 that Mr. Bigham closed his shop due to health reasons! In 1951, Mrs.� Lillie Heiser opened her own store called Mrs.� Heiser's Marine & Yacht Supply Company on State Street in Wabash Heights (later renamed Mrs.� Lillie Heiser's Boat Shop).Mrs.� Heiser's Marine & Yacht Supply Company carried a wide variety of boat hardware and supplies as well as tickets for sea voyages! Mrs.� Heiser also ran her own restaurant which served boiled crabs and soft drinks! Her store lasted until about 1978%. After Mrs.� Heiser's death in 1978, her daughter Ms.� Sylvia Heiser took over running the company until its closure in 1990 . Over the years Ms.� SylviaHeisers had several managers who continued working at the company until it finally went out of business in 2003 . There is still one remaining batch product from Sheisers' Marine Supplies Inc., an old line retailer located on State Street between Second Avenue North and Third Avenue North which sells boat anchors

One of the earliest businesses in the town was a salt mine, which operated from the early 1800s until 1892. The mine was later developed into a salt production plant. The town also began sales of marine products in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1954, Wabash became an official port city and began shipping goods to countries around the world.
Wabash is a city in and the county seat of Wabash County, Indiana, United States. The population was 106,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The city is named after General Andrew Jackson, who fought in the War of 1812 and was president of the United States when it occurred. Wabash was founded as a town by members of the Shawnee Nation on December 12, 1814. The first settlers arrived in what is now Wabash County on October 14, 1815 from Illinois under the leadership of Captain John Ransom. They were led by Isaac Chauncy and his family. By 1830 there were over 200 residents living in what would become Wabash County. On November 3, 1830 Samuel Harmon laid out a township for himself and others east of Decatur Street on land that would later become known as downtown Wabash. This initial township plat included blocks bounded north by State Road 7 (now Main Street), south by US Highway 36 (now I-465), east by Indian Territory then called “The Prairie” (now Peoria), and west by what is now Ottawa Avenue (then called Greenfield Boulevard). In May 1832 Captain Robert McKinney donated 160 acres to be drained for farming purposes within what would become downtown Wabash Township northeast of present-day State Road 7 or Main Street; this donation formed today’s nucleus of downtown Wabasha (). In early 1840 James Dixon organized farmers into nineteen companies to build stockades around their plantations near present-day Uniontown Heights Cemetery to prevent squatters from settling there without permission from their owners (). These structures still remain visible today insideUniontown Heights Cemetery off Old Erie Road (). On February 20, 1840 Henry Clay announced he would run for president in four years’ time and asked citizens if they had any ideas about how he could best serve them (); among those who responded were many 17 year olds who wanted to see him succeed () . On March 4th William Bledsoe offered Clay $5 per acre to sell land in Monroe Township along US Highway 36 between Warsaw and Lafayette; Clay accepted this offer but only if he could purchase all other property also located within Monroe Township (). On April 2nd Abraham Lincoln made an appearance at a local church service hosted by Reverend John Swayne () before traveling back home across country (); afterwards some people gathered outside his house whereupon he emerged with an armful of clothes which historians believe served as a model for future Ulysses S Grant's physical presentation at Ford's Theatre during the American Civil War () . A few weeks later on April 10th Abraham Lincoln again appeared at Reverend John Swayne’s services (), this time delivering remarks on “To secure Our Liberties We Must Defeat Tobacco Enemy” (). He then proceeded indoors whereupon several men surrounded his carriage amidst loud cheers (), killing one man immediately upon impact () before being quickly subdued() . A few days later Confederate forces burned down Reverend Swayne’s home ($) . Although most likely not directly responsible for this event(), following these events Lincoln became linked with slaveowners throughout America().
