Wabash, Indiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 5,629 at the 2010 census and 6,958 at the 2016 census. Wabash is part of the Terre Haute–South Bend–Fremont metropolitan area. It is located on Wabash River between Terre Haute and South Bend. The first white person to settle in what is now Wabash County was Nicholas Latimer in 1814. He built a cabin on the banks of the current Wabash River near present day Greencastle. The first courthouse in what is now Wabash County was built in 1824 by James Caldwell and it served as both county seat and judicial center for much of its early years. In 1836, a railroad station was built northeast of present day Greencastle on what would become known as "Latimer's Branch." This facility helped stimulate growth along the then-new line that connected Chicago with Indianapolis via Terre Haute and other townships east of Lafayette (now Evansville). By 1850, nearly all rural Indians had been driven out of this region by waves of investment from various European Americans seeking to start new settlements in this fertile land mass that included large amounts of coal, iron ore, timber, water resources, and agricultural potential. In 1861 when Indiana became one nation following its Unificationist Manifesto, Wabash became part of newly organized Union territory within Illinois Territory which also included present day Michigan Territory including Dearborn County and parts of today's Illinois andIndiana Counties as well as most or allof today's western Kentucky counties excepting Hazard County . On November 3rd 1860 voters approved an ordinance creating a local government for “the Township or Boroughs Numbered One Hundred And Twenty-Six” within Union territory which later comprised most or allof today’s south central Indiana including WabASH COUNTY . Effective January 1st 1865 – becoming effective upon ratification by Congress – these new precincts were designated “WABASH COUNTY” under statutes passed by the General Assembly apportioned according to population size (15 square miles) rather than racial composition ( regardless of location ). The area now known as Wabash was first settled by the Potawatomi people in the late 17th century. In 1812, when Wabash Township was organized, it included what are today the towns of Richmond and Uniontown. On December 12, 1827, Wabash became one of seven original counties in Indiana Territory. On March 15, 1851, it passed a vote to become a state within the United States due to concerns over growing slavery in neighboring Illinois. The county seat moved from Richmond to Wabash on December 1, 1861. In 1865–1867 when Indian Territory was created out of part of Minnesota and Iowa following the American Civil War (the war's final round of fighting), parts of Richland and Dearborn Counties were annexed into Indian Territory because they sympathized with Confederate forces that had fought for the Union against their southern counterparts.
