Washington is a small town in central Indiana, located on the eastern edge of the Hoosier Hills. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. Washington is one of twelve towns and villages in the unincorporated community of Pithole, which has a population of just under 100. The first settler in what would become Washington was Nicholas Riley in 1824. Riley homesteaded land he had purchased from David Allred two years earlier. He named his new place Nicholas after Nicholas French, the governor of Louisiana who had settled nearby in 1818 and helped organizeIndiana's western border with Missouri. At first, Riley kept much of his original land for himself and his family but later sold some parcels to other settlers including J C Griggs who became manager of Fort Wayne's post office. In 1830, Daniel Morgan established a gristmill on White River near present day Washington which began operations as America's first commercial mill. By 1840, there were six mills operating in central Indiana; three along White River and three on Brush Creek east of Warsaw (the location where Granger now stands). The growth of corn and cotton farming led to increased demand for water power for mills which started appearing along White River by 1845; this also led to development around Brush Creek. One early resident remembered that "Pithole" consisted mostly of log huts without any fences or houses back then." In 1850s lime kilns were constructed along Brush Creek by James Fenton as part of efforts by farmers to increase their production using available farmland south of Warsaw Road (now South Bend Street). A store soon opened at Pithole wagons having originated from Cairo (now Terre Haute) where wagon drivers brought goods back and forth across rural Indiana during the late 1800s such as flour, cheese, bacon, appleseed oil and other items needed for agricultural production
