The Army was founded in 1775, and the first unit to serve in Indiana was the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards. The Indiana National Guard has served in all three branches of the U.S. military since World War II; during that time, it has made over 150 deployments to overseas theaters including Iraq and Afghanistan. The United States Army Garrison in West Lafayette, Indiana was established on December 14th, 1812. The first unit to arrive in the area was the 1st Regiment of Infantry from Illinois. The garrison served as a training ground and later as a garrison for the landowning families who donated land for the fortification. On November 3rd 1861, it was announced that Fort Dearborn would be closed down and all its personnel would be transferred to West Lafayette. On October 24th 1861, General David C. Evans arrived at Fort Dearborn with an army of over 150,000 soldiers and he ordered the detachment of artillerymen to leave for West Lafayette immediately. It is said that when these cannons were unloaded they created such a fire that Evans had to order his men back into line! In 1865-1866, while Fort Dearborn was being renovated by Colonel John Silliphant (who also supervised construction of nearby Soldiers' Home),West Lafayette became home to Headquarters Squadron AAG 10th Cavalry Regiment made up mostly of Irish immigrants who were forced out of their homes during the American Civil War. In 1898-1900, after Ft. Dearborn was decommissioned and merged into other military installations near Indianapolis,West Lafayette lost its status as an Army garrison but still retains some historical significance due to its association with Army officers who attended college here including Major General George Armstrong Custer and Lieutenant Colonel James Fenton Woodruff who both graduated from Purdue University in 1879 and 1880 respectively.
West Lafayette, Indiana is a small town in the Central Indiana area. The population was 20,811 at the 2010 census. West Lafayette is part of the Lafayette, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a post office on October 1, 1824 and was named for General Andrew Jackson's home in Tennessee. The first store in what is now West Lafayette was built by Josiah Harmar and his brother Eli in 1830. In 1837, Congress passed an act that created Purdue University and renamed all of central Indiana "Purdue University District." The original school buildings were located on Broadway Street between Third and Fourth Streets. In 1851, west of Broadway Street (now east of Main) there was a natural gas well that served as the town's primary source of income until it closed in 1922 due to depletion. In 1933, when Purdue moved its main campus from downtown to Weingarden Stadium northwest of town (then called West Lafayette), the old school buildings became college dormitories for students from nearby rural towns who could not attend Purdue because their schools were too far away or too expensive to transport totown each day. In 1954-1955, Ives Aircraft Corporation built an airplane factory near West Lafayette which made parts for Douglas DC-3s and Pan American World Airways Boeing Stratocruisers during World War II. After the war ended Ives shut down its plant but continued making parts for other aircraft manufacturers until it ceased operations in 1982. West Lafayette has experienced many changes over time including annexation by neighboring La Grange Township in 1907 and then again by LaGrange Township in 1916; becoming part of the larger city of Terre Haute after being annexed three times; coming under aerial bombardment during World War II; experiencing rapid growth with annexations throughout the 1950s through 1970s asTerre Haute grew faster than any other municipality within central Indiana; reaching its current population size following annexations again beginning around 2000 In recent years there have been efforts to start or revive businesses within West Lafayette including: Oneonta Brewing Company - established in 2006 which produces craft beers based out of oneonta, IN; iHeartRadio - founded 2005 which includes programming such as "I Heart Radio"and "Hip Hop Hype", among others; Myer's Department Store - opened up shop inside Fenton Mall back in 2009 after having been closed since 1987 due to renovations carried out at then- Shea’s department store across town (later Sears department store); startup company Easton Furniture announced plans to open up a new location inside Fenton mall late last year followed by news this week that they will open up another location just outside Easton Shopping Center also known as "The Village". Additionally numerous restaurants have opened up over time such as Carl's Jr., Subway & Papa John's Pizza amongst others although some continue business while others close down citing lack of patronage or competition from similar restaurants opening up closer to town

The settlement was located in what is now the city of West Lafayette and it grew rapidly due to its location on the banks of the Wabash River. The town participated in several Indian Wars and became a garrison for Fort Dearborn during the War of 1812. In 1836, West Lafayette became an independent village and remained so until 1850 when it merged with neighboring East Lansing into the newly formed Village of East Lansing.
