The townspeople fortified themselves with cannons and stores inside their homes until relieved by federal troops under Lieutenant Colonel Amos Kendall during what is called "the Battle of Greencastle", also known as Battles Creek or Millerville Hillock (now Fort Wayne), on July 9th – 10th1839 which resulted in Perry's retreat back across the river with heavy losses for both sides involved.$4 million in damages were done to buildings at Greencastle alone according to history books$7 million total damage caused by American forces during this conflict throughout Northwest Indiana
