Zionsville is a small town in the southernmost corner of Indiana, in the Decatur County seat. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Zionsville was Gideon Welles, who came to the area in 1814 and platted what is now Zionsville on land that he had bought from William Henry Harrison. For many years, Zionsville was known as "the little village." In 1837, J.C. Penney opened his store and post office here. A year later, he built a log cabin opposite present-day First Baptist Church which became his home until his death in 1863. His wife lived here also until her death in 1886. In 1871, John Fenton organized and built the first frame house north of today's courthouse square; it still stands today within easy walking distance of both First Baptist Church and Penney's Store (now the focal point of Main Street). This early pioneer community thrived for a few decades but then began to decline due to various factors - including changing farming practices and increased railroad travel through central Indiana - which led to its eventual demise by 1920. Today, much of what used to be Zionsville has been replaced by larger subdivisions or neighborhoods along Main Street between Ulysses S Grant Boulevard (home of downtown Indy) and New York Avenue/Hennepin Avenue; these areas have experienced rapid growth since their inception around 1990 as Indianapolis' new downtown core moved away from Zionsville towards northside neighborhoods like Greenwood Village and North Central Indiana University Districts (northwest side streets running parallel with I-465 near Purdue University). However, some aspects of local history such as Gideon Welles House are still visible throughout these newer areas – most notably within blocks east of First Baptist Church on New York Avenue/Hennepin Avenue where an exhibit about this historical landmark is currently being held during regular business hours every Saturday evening from 4-8pm..
