Altoona is a small town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. It was founded in 1879 by John S. Eaton and his wife, Sarah. The town has grown since then; it now has a population of over 10,000 people. Altoona is the largest municipality in Polk County by area. Altoona was originally named "Newberry" after the Newberry family who had settled there in 1851. The name change came about because the local post office at that time served only as an outpost for nearby Davenport. In 1878, Eaton donated land to make up for running out of money he had borrowed from a banking company while he was governor of Iowa. This donation made Altoona one of the earliest towns in Polk County and helped its growth significantly during its early years. The first store opened in Altoona on July 6, 1879, by Jens Jensen and Wm Hargrave with assistance from their father-in-law, Amos Merrill (1812-1887). The store became one of the most successful businesses in the community and continued to operate until it closed its doors in 1951 due to rising business costs associated with World War II regulations governing the sale of radio frequencies across America. However, this landmark establishment left an enduring impact on both Altoona's history and economy which can still be seen today through downtown's many businesses such as cyber cafes and bookstores as well as numerous antique shops located throughout the community center Historic district dating back to 1907 which features several important civic buildings including municipal hall (built 1888), county courthouse (1909), bank building (1911), fire station (1914), high school gymnasium (1929) and more recently a shopping mall called "Eaton Plaza".
