The Ames, Iowa Coast Guard Station has been a part of the city's community since it was founded in 1853. The station is one of the oldest continuous government run institutions in the United States. The Coast Guard Museum and Library is located on the station grounds and offers a variety of exhibits about boating, fishing, and shipbuilding. In addition to its museum, the station also contains an operations room used during emergencies and a recreated lifesaving command center complete with alligators!

The Coast Guard has a rich history that can be traced back to 1790. At the time, the coast guard was just a group of men who patrolled the coastline. In 1821, Congress passed an act that created the Coast Guard in order to protect American coastlines from piracy and other threats. The first Coast Guard officer was appointed in 1825. The Coast Guard has since grown into one of America’s most important security agencies. Today, the Coast Guard operates more than 4,500 vessel and aircraft across 42 states and Puerto Rico. The agency provides maritime security and disaster relief services as well as support for local law enforcement. In addition, the Coast Guard is responsible for providing education on safety issues related to waterways and coastal communities. The history of gift giving to the Coast Guard is long and varied.
