The army has been in Ankeny, Iowa for over a hundred years. The first soldiers who arrived here in 1846 were part of the 3rd Infantry Regiment. The unit was disbanded in 1847 and its members enlisted with other units. In 1862, Ankeny attracted attention when it became the site of the Battle of Fort Douglas. General Abraham Lincoln was visiting the town and ordered his troops to move into position on hills overlooking the town. The battle lasted three days and ended with Union victory. Ankeny's history continued to be flurry as events took place here that affected both sides of the Civil War. On November 8, 1863, General George Custer surrendered at Little Big Horn after a six-day battle near this community. This event made Ankeny an important military center during the war and changed its name to Omaha City in 1865 after General Custer's surrender. The city experienced another influx of soldiers during World War II when over one thousand men from all over Nebraska came here to fight for their country. Many businesses were created around this time including Boeing Airplane Company, Chrysler Corporation, Mid-Continent Oil Field Company, and much more later on in history. Today, Ankeny is known for its annual Constitution Day Parade which starts off downtown with floats filled with people dressed like patriots from all walks of life parade down Fourth Street until they reach Main Street where events happen such as speeches by local mayors andaffles by brass bands before finally ending up back at downtown square where games are played until 11pm

The first settler in Ankeny was James Hickey in 1854. A post office called Ankeny was established in 1855 and remained in operation until 1959. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who fought during the Indian Wars and died at battles near Fort Kipling on July 25, 1876. In 1870, an act to organize a township was filed with the Iowa State Legislature. On November 3, 1870, the township's first election took place and it was formed as Ankeny Township. The name of the town originated from General Custer's death when his Cavalry unit encountered Apache Indians near Fort Kipling on July 25, 1876. The first store in Ankeny opened its doors on December 12, 1861; it was operated by Averill Davenport & Brothers. In 1865–1866 (the year before Reconstruction began), Union soldiers under Colonel Leland Stanford attacked and burned all but four homes of African Americans living within five miles of WestDes Moines; this event is commonly known as "The Burning of Ankeny". In 1898–99 (the year after American entry into World War I), there were several attacks against white farmers across what is now Monona County by Native Americans resulting in more than twenty fatalities; these events are also commonly known as "The Indian Wars". In 1909–10 (the year following World War I), oil wells were drilled in what is now Ankeny Township and production began soon afterward; this event led to increased business for local merchants and helped spur development throughout the community which today has over two thousand residents including seven hundred businesses. In 1971–72 (the year followingMonona County’s annexation into Des Moines metropolitan area), construction began on Interstate 35W which bisected Ankeny Township between Cedar Rapids to the east and downtown to the west; this project eventually resulted in an increase of traffic through town center which has often lead to disruptions for local businesses due to maximum occupancy limits set by I-35W officials during rush hour periods
