In 1928, Mr. and Mrs. John Hirsch founded the First National Coffee Company in Ankeny with the goal of providing high-quality coffee to area residents. The company continued to grow until 1972 when it merged into Peet's Coffee Company. Today, The First National Coffee Company is still in operation as an independently owned business distributing high-quality coffee products throughout southeast Iowa and parts of northwest Missouri. The history of fresh roasted coffee is reflective of the local culture and economy in which it played a role. In addition to being popular among locals, fresh roasted beans were also used by businesses across town for their morning caffeine fix or used as ingredients in other dishes enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Ankeny is a town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,914 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. The name Ankeny is derived from Onion Creek and Ankeny House, two early settler homes. The first permanent settler in what would become Ankeny was James Atherton in 1838. He built the first house on the site that now forms the town center. Atherton's son, John Atherton, organized a Methodist church in 1855 and named his home "Atherton's Landmark". In 1871, Jno. Murchison established a mill here which became one of the largest in Iowa and served as a major economic engine for the community until it closed its doors in 1934. In 1916-1917 when Des Moines wanted to annex Ankeny into its city limits due to growing population growth within city limits – then called South Des Moines – an unofficial referendum was held with residents voting by mail to keep their own municipally run services separate from those provided by Des Moines’s newly formed city government. After four months of dispute over how to apportion benefits between both entities (and an estimated $50,000 worth of damage done to municipal property), Mayor Clarence Carlson convinced City Hall officials to annex Ankeny into South Des Moines through negotiation rather than force a vote because he felt that annexation would ultimately lead to more prosperity for both towns; however this decision did not satiateDesMoines’ animosity towards Ankeny for many years thereafter.– See also: History of Polk County

Ankeny, Iowa is an unincorporated community in Dodge County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Ankeny is located on the eastern border of Dodge County and is north of Sioux City. It lies along State Highway 95E, about 10 miles (16 km) northeast of the city of Sioux City. The community was founded in 1868 by John P. Weikert as a small farming village on the banks of streams that drained into the Des Moines River. In 1875, Weikert donated land to Dodge County for a public school district. The first school building was erected in Ankeny in 1876. The community became an incorporated town in 1902 and remained so until its annexation by Sioux City in 1964. A post office called Ankeny was established at this location in 1876; it changed its name to Sioux City after being granted county status. The town had a population of 2,618 at the 2000 census; however, because it has been annexed by other cities multiple times since then, its population has never been counted accurately as one single municipality
Ankeny is located in the far northwestern corner of Iowa. It was founded by a group of farmers in 1854, and became an important center for early cotton farming. The city was named after General Ankeny, who fought in the Mexican-American War.
