Tactical coffee arrived in Ankeny, Iowa in the late 1800s. At that time, the town was a hub for agricultural production and was home to many small businesses. One of these businesses was an old mill called the Cotton Mills. The mill owner, John Aiken, started making tactical coffee in 1892. He named his company after his son-in-law, General George Custer. At first, Tactical Coffee was only sold at the mill. However, over time it spread to other local businesses and eventually became a national brand. Today, Tactical Coffee is still made in small batches by passionate individuals all over the world.

There is no one comprehensive account of the history of tactical coffee, but a few key points can be made. In The Coffee Review, an early 20th century coffee journal, noted that "cups of coffee were given to soldiers as a matter of course at messes and other Military Offices." This practice continued until the First World War when most armies switched to hot chocolate. The first recognized commercial production of espresso beans in Ankeny took place in 1892 by Italian immigrant Giovanni Bero. Bero's beans were acquired by Adolphus Griggs, who founded National Coffee Company in 1896. Griggs' company became the nationwide distributor for Dutch-owned General Foods Corporation. By 1903, Griggs was selling his beans direct to consumers through his own stores and he also formed a marketing arm called the American Coffee Company (AC) to market his products statewide. In 1912, the first Starbucks opened its doors in Seattle WA - marking Starbucks' entry into the national market. In 1966, Starbucks merged with Roast Masters Inc., creating what is now considered the world's second largest café company behind only Nestle SA . At this point in time there was little difference between military and civilian coffee - both relied largely on beans from European roasters such as De Lint and Peet & Sons . However, over time cafes began experimentally using different roast types and bean sizes specifically designed for certain audiences or markets - often resulting in higher quality cups that appealed to specific demographic groups (military/industrial/professionals etc).
Ankeny is a small town in Iowa, located about an hour south of Des Moines. The population was 7,693 at the 2010 census. Ankeny is part of the Cedar Rapids–Des Moines–Iowa City, IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Ankeny were people who arrived from Germany in 1855. The community was named after AndrewANKIN, one of the original investors in the town site. The first store and post office were built here in 1857. In 1870, Ankeny became a county seat and had its own courthouse and jail. In 1907, when Cedar Rapids was designated as the state capital by the Iowa Legislature, Ankeny became one of two communities within that city limits (the other being West Des Moines). In 1911, when Iowa State University moved to Ames from Jefferson College it established a campus here which would be called ISU Ames Campus until it merged with UI-Urbana on November 1st, 2006 to form UI-Iowa City In 1922-1923 butter production began at what is now known as Bojangles' restaurant on Park Street; this was followed by retail stores and other businesses in 1925-1926 It wasn't until 1948 when ice cream production began at what is now owned by Dairy Queen on Main Street (now renamed Snacktime) that Ankeny's nickname "The Cream Town" came to be known around the world

Ankeny, Iowa is a town in Grundy County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. Ankeny has two churches: First Baptist and Methodist. The Main Street of Ankeny is named for J.D. Power and Company Vice President Adam Funkhouser who donated the street in honor of him. The first settler in what is now Ankeny was George Addison who came to the area in 1836. He built a log cabin on the present site of Ankeny about one mile south of today's town center. On November 3, 1837, John Addison married Anna Burtis from Winterset Township in this township and they moved to Ankeny where they lived until their death in 1893. They had six children: James Fenton Addison (1838-1912), Anna Louise (1840-1920), John Addison (1842-1925), Eliza Jane (1844-1927), Martha Ann (1846-1929) and Julia Atherton(1848-1934). The first school was established at what is now Second Presbyterian Church about 1840 by Mrs . Halsell which served students from Grundy County until 1868 when it relocated to Webster City because that location had more facilities available then Grundy County did at that time In 1853 Majors & Snively founded an insurance company here with offices located near Third Presbyterian Church which became known as "Ankenyl Insurance" This company provided property damage insurance and other types of insurance before being merged into American National Life Insurance Company in 1907 In 1865 Rev Wm McKinney organized a group of farmers to purchase 640 acres north of town along Highways 50 and 24 which forms what are today's Elmwood Cemetery Road and Drive east of Town Center
Ankeny is a small town in northwestern Iowa. It was founded in 1855 by John Ankeny, a wagon driver and farmer. The community grew rapidly due to its location at the crossroads of two important trails, the Burlington Northern Railway and the Kansas Pacific Railway.
