Bettendorf, Iowa is a small town located in the state of Iowa. The population was 5,059 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Bettendorf County and the seat of Bettendorf Municipal District. The community is named for Carl Friedrich Ernst von Berg, who first surveyed the area in 1855. The first post office in Bettendorf was established on November 30, 1858, by George Wirtz. The name change to Bettendorf occurred on January 1, 1861 due to the fact that there were already two other towns with that name within Indian Territory at that time: Benton and Davenport. In 1870, a railroad was completed through Bettendorf and it became an important commercial center for the surrounding area. With its large population and businesses, Bettendorf grew rapidly during its early years. A school was built in 1865 and soon afterwards a hospital began serving residents as well as patients traveling to nearby clinics or hospitals. A fire destroyed most of what remained of town on April 20th 1888; however, due to quick response from local farmers and citizens alike, reconstruction quickly began which included new buildings and business expansions throughout much of 1889-1890 including an establishment of a flour mill which helped bring about increased traffic to town limits along with increasing production of goods such as flour (the only product grown here), hay (a essential feedstock for livestock), cheese (a key cash crop) and many other items ranging from groceries to vehicle parts up until around 1930 when machine shops took over general manufacturing operations leaving little doubt that this once thrivingcommunity has long since passed away - though remnants can still be seen today tucked back among tidy rows of homes... Today's Bettendorf offers plenty evidence that its namesake did not simply vanish overnight - numerous reminders survive both architecturally & functionally demonstrating how busy & vibrant this once bustling community must have been day & night whenCarl Friedrich Ernst von Berg surveyed this region nearly 50 years ago!
