In 1941, the Iowa Air National Guard became a full-time military force and the squadron was renamed The 6th Fighter Wing. From 1945 to 1949, it operated out of RAF Horsham in England as part of United Kingdom's European Theater of Operations during World War II. The original Kaskaskia community was destroyed by a flood in 1847, but another settlement was founded at this location two years later and became known as Cedar Rapids. Today's downtown area was built up around two large shopping malls - First National Bank Plaza and Home Depot Center - between 1984 and 1998. Together, these complexes hosted over 150 million square feet (14 hectares) of retail space when they were completed. At their peak, these two malls accounted for more than 50% of all retail sales in Iowa!

In 1925, however, Cedar Rapids reclaimed its place as one of America's fastest-growing cities with the founding of their first college – Drake University – which helped drive economic development throughout the years. Today, despite having lost some key aspects such as shopping districts and churches (due to redevelopment projects), CedarRapids remains an important cultural center for CentralIA and an important tourist destination for visitors from all over North America.
