Cedar Rapids, Iowa is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa and the county seat of Cedar County. The population was 71,912 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Mississippi River and is home to Cedar Rapids State University. The Cedar Rapids area began settling in the early 18th century as French traders and missionaries traveled through what is now Minnesota looking for new land to settle. In 1838, when Iowa was organized as a Territory, Cedar Rapids became its first capital. Although many settlers arrived during the 1830s and 1840s, it wasn't until after Indians were killed by white settlers that violence broke out between whites and Native Americans in what would become known as the Dakota War (1863-1868). As a result of this conflict, western Sioux Nation moved into present-day Iowa from their traditional territories in Minnesota and North Dakota in an attempt to protect their lands from encroachment by European settlers. In 1865, Congress passed The Indian Appropriations Act which authorized President Andrew Johnson to allot land to Native American tribes in exchange for goods such as horses, beads, clothing, guns and other items. This act led to what would be known as The Great Sioux Settlement Scheme – an effort by northern farmers who had bought Indian land over time to sell it back to native groups in order to recoup their investment while also creating new markets for their products abroad. Today's downtown area was built up around this period of history with businesses like Sears & Roebuck selling merchandise directly to Native Americans on reservations across America. Additionally, local banks like First Union offered similar services throughout much of Indian country until these institutions were banned under federal law following the Trail of Tears incident (1860). In 1840,[2] Cedar Rapids became one of twelve territorial capitals established within Iowa; most notably because it housed both legislative chambers until Des Moines replaced Vandalia in 1851[3]. That year saw two significant events happen within town limits: 1) John Pugh was elected mayor after being elected captain of militia at age 17,[4] marking an important milestone for young adulthood; 2) A store called "The Blacksmith" opened up on Third Street east of County Hall which would become one of town's mainstay businesses.[5][6] With so many people living and working near each other during this time period there was little room for development beyond Main Street – which contributed significantly towards its current appearance today despite having undergone several renovations over time including repairs that added more than 10 stories high since it reopened in 2006[7].

Cedar Rapids was founded in 1854 as a trading post on the Iowa River by Captain John Sutter. The city grew up around the Cedar Rapids Arsenal, which was built to produce arms for the Indian Wars. After World War I, Cedar Rapids became a center for agricultural production and began to experience rapid growth in the 1920s and 1930s. In recent years, however, Cedar Rapids has been struggling with declining economic fortunes and deterioration of its infrastructure.
Cedar Rapids was founded in 1847 as the first city in Iowa. The Cedar Rapids and Rock Island Railroad was built to connect the two cities, and the city's first store was opened in 1853. In 1872, Cedar Rapids became a republic, and the Iowa Legislature moved from Des Moines to Cedar Rapids to create a more centralized government. The city's first library was opened in 1903. In 1916, Cedar Rapids become an incorporated town, and its first mayor was elected by popular vote. The City Council replaced the Mayor with an appointed board of commissioners in 1977. In 1984, Cedar Rapids became a charter city and adopted a slogan of "The City That Can."
