The Davenport coast guard gift history began in 1923 when Captain John W. Laughlin was hired as the first coast guard captain in the town. The Coast Guard was founded on May 12, 1903, by Governor John C. Pritzker. Captain Laughlin's appointment as the first captain of the coast guard signified a new era for Iowa's coastline and protected it from harm. In 1923, Captain Laughlin donated his home, land and equipment to help build the Davenport lighthouse. The lighthouse is now a part of the Iowa State Historical Society and is open to the public each day from 9am to 4pm. In 1938,Captain Edward J. Kapp donated a tugboat called HMCS Canadensis to the Coast Guard for use during World War II. Davenport is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 61,269 at the 2010 census. Davenport is the fourth-largest city in Iowa and the second-largest city in the state of Iowa after Des Moines. It lies on the Arkansas River, about 31 miles (49 km) northeast of Sioux City and 57 miles (113 km) east of Omaha. The first settler in what is now Davenport was James Kapp, who arrived there on October 15, 1829. He named it after his father Davenport, a man from New York State who had come to this region as an emigrant in 1824. A post office called Kapp until July 1, 1853 because no one had taken up the offer to name their town after him when they were offered land grants for that purpose. Davenport grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to its location near two important railroads: the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad and the Union Pacific Railway. The arrival of these railways encouraged businesses and citizens to start build new homes; this growth also helped contribute to Davenporter's current popularity as a retirement or vacation community.
