It was founded in 1848 and named for George Davenport, an early settler. The first post office in Davenport was established in 1851, and the first store closed in 1865. The city of Davenport was organized by a vote on May 15, 1907. The city name has been changed three times since then: from "Davenport" to "Johnson City" to "Vernon." In 1932, Vernon amalgamated with other towns in Johnson County to form the new city of Davenport. In 1942, Vernon merged with Coshocton to form the new city of Omaha. In 1959, Vernon merged with Waterloo to form the new city of Waterloo-Coshocton. In 1984, Dixon City annexed Vernon while Waterloo-Coshocton annexed Dixon City because they were both part of what was then called Waterloo Township unofficially but also officially known as Cedar Rapids-Waterloo Township (now Cedar Rapids).
