Air Force gift history in Iowa City, Iowa began in 1941 when the United States Air Forces activated the 1st Tactical Air Command (1TAC) which was stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB. In 1942, the 1TAC was redesignated as The 8th Tactical Air Command and moved to RAF Halesowen, England. From 1943 until 1946, The 8th TAC operated out of RAF Saffron Walden. In 1945, The 1st Wing was activated at Wright-Patterson AFB and stationed there with The 8th TAC. From 1947 until 1951, wing headquarters were located at RAF Lakenheath. From 1951 until 1957 they relocated to RAF Waddington where they served as Headquarters of Eighth USAF Divisional Combat Commands (ECC). Finally in 1958 they moved back to Wright-Patterson AFB and continued their operational career as Headquarters of Ninth Tactical Air Command (9TACA). Since activation of the USAF in 1941 through 1945 it has provided more than 11 million service members with their opportunity to fly or serve aboard an American aircraft while deployed around the world;Operation Desert Storm being just one example during that time frame! And because of this long history and dedication by our military members we continue to provide opportunities for Service Members throughout Iowa City through Blue Angels flights and numerous other events/events related to airforce appreciation week each year.
