Iowa City is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa, and the seat of Johnson County. The population was 382 at the 2010 census, down from 498 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Des Moines–Wahoka metropolitan area. The first permanent settlers in what is now Iowa City were Levi Coffin and his family who arrived in 1839. They founded a trading post on the east bank of the Missouri River and named it after their crops’ production site, Iowa City (then spelled Cedar Rapids). In 1847, John Crain donated land to build what would become Iowa State University; Iowa City became its first campus. The original courthouse was erected in 1851 and served as the county seat until 1886 when it moved to Council Bluffs. In 1857, James Wicker built a cotton gin on present-day Vine Street near Whatcom Avenue for growing cotton for local mills; this gin is still standing today and is one of Iowa's oldest surviving businesses. From this small beginning, IAFFE (the Illinois Cotton Federation) grew into one of America's largest cottonseed growers with operations throughout central Illinois and southern Indiana. In 1903, IAFFE merged with National Cotton Council to form United States Cotton Growers Association (USCGA). During World War II, many industries closed or relocated due to shortages due to wartime rationing; however, agriculture remained dominant with major crops such as corn (maize), soybeans (soy milk), wheaten flour, oilseeds, potatoes and other vegetables being raised commercially for food production only during lean years such as those following WWII. Afterward many farms closed while others redeveloped; by 2005 there were only about 10%Of acres remaining farmer-owned in rural areas across America despite increasing acreage cultivated for food production under green revolution technologies since WWII which has tripled farm output annually since 1990 through 2016 according to US Department of Agricultureotton stats
