The United States Air Force has a long and proud history in Johnston, Iowa. The military service has played an important role in the community since it was first organized in 1941. The USAF's history begins with World War II when the city of Johnston was chosen as the site for airfield development. In 1942, General Spaatz designated the new airbase at Johnson City as the home of the Eighth Air Force. From then on, Johnston was an important hub for USAF activity in Central Iowa and surrounding states. In 1947, General Hoyt Vandenberg established headquarters for USAF forces in Johnston. This marked a major change for the town as it became one of America's primary airfields. Today, Johnston is still home to many active duty USAF personnel, both stationed here and rotating through from other bases around Iowa. The town also features a number of civilian businesses that support military operations. Johnston has been host to numerous Air Force fly-ins over the years; most notably during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. As an important part of American airspace, wartime flying events have helped to shape local identities and culture. Today, locals continue to celebrate fly-in days with popular festivities like parade week and open house weekend.

This is a continuation of an article about the Johnston, Iowa air force gift history. The Johnston, Iowa Air Force Base was founded on July 1, 1942. On that date, the United States Air Force organized as a boy-town. The base was named in honor of Colonel James W. Johnston who had served as Commandant of cadets at Wright Field, Ohio and Seventh Air Force Commander during World War II. The first enlistedmen arrived at the base on October 15th, 1942. The first officers were commissioned on November 1st. The air force has grown rapidly over the years with more than 9,000 personnel now stationed here including 4 fighter squadrons and 2 bomber units! The Johnston AFB Gift History begins with Congressman Robert Aderholt who donated land to the USAF in 1943 for training use by bombers and fighter pilots from around the country. This donation helped start what would become one of America’s most powerful aircraft forces! In 1951, General Curtis LeMay donated another piece of land to the USAF which became known as “LeMay AFB” after him! Over time many other members have given money or goods to support our military service here at Johnson AFB including: congressmen Tom Lantos (D-CA), Barney Frank (D-MA), Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Tim Ryan (D-OH) and John Boehner (R-OH)!
Johnston, Iowa is a small town in the northwest corner of Iowa. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids–Janesville, IA-KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Johnston arrived in 1855. There were only five families living there when it was organized as a town on February 14, 1907. At that time it had a population of just over 100 people and was named after General John A. Johnston who had served in the Union army during the American Civil War. Johnston has experienced many changes over its history including several name changes (from Jennings to Johnston to Waterloo to Cedar Rapids) and numerous businesses opened and closed throughout its years of existence. One aspect that has not changed much is its reliance on agriculture for most of its residents which continues to be one of the town's mainstay industries today. One reason why Johnston has remained so strong despite these challenges is because its citizens are very active in their local community affairs which includes serving on various boards and committees as well as working hard towards promoting economic development within the town limits.
The United States Air Force has a rich airforce history that reaches back to World War I. The first fighter planes were built by the Wright brothers in 1903, and theAAF was founded on Feb. 1, 1920. In 1951, the USAF became an all-volunteer military service with its own budget and structure. However, the USAF began providing support for NATO in 1955 and participated in several wars since then. Today, the USAF is one of America’s most powerful militaries with more than 2,000 active duty aircraft and more than 310,000 personnel worldwide. One of the Agency's earliest successes came during World War I when it played a leading role in defeating Austria-Hungary's army at Manstein Field near Salzburg. This victory demonstrated both American aviation power and ability to operate far from home. The following year saw another significant victory against Germany when Hellenikon Aerodrome was used to house Lockheed P-1 “Nimble” reconnaissance planes during aerial combat operations over Europe known as "The Great War." In 1918 alone, American planes flew 2 million miles (3 million km) across Europe in support of Allied forces while also conducting bombing raids on German cities. Despite these impressive accomplishments during World War I, it was not until after hostilities had ended that true Air Force development could begin under Secretary of Defense William Howard Taft's leadership in 1921. taft realized that airpower would be crucial to America's future warfighting potential and directed his secretary of warardent Albert Einstein to create what is now known as National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). With new funding available from Congress through appropriations acts dating back to 1923–29—the first time such funds had been allocated specifically for aeronautics—Einstein began working on developing large jet airplanes capable of carrying heavy payloads into orbit around Earth or conducting other high priority missions beyond our planet’s atmosphere. These ambitious goals would finally be achieved with President Franklin D Roosevelt’s New Deal program which added $25 billion (equivalent today) to US coffers between 1933–39 for military procurement purposes alone! Undoubtedly one result of this infusion of resources was increased research activity at NASA which along with advances being made elsewhere within government led directly to WWII success!

The town grew rapidly due to its location on the West Branch of the Missouri River and its position as the gateway to what would become Iowa. In 1871, Johnston was named after General James H. Johnston, who fought at Yorktown in Virginia and served as commanding general of Union forces during the American Civil War. The town's growth continued through the 20th century until it reached its peak in the early 21st century when it had a population of over 10,000 residents. However, since then Johnston has experienced numerous declines in population and economic activity. Today, Johnston is a small community with only a few hundred residents remaining. Its economy revolves primarily around agriculture and tourism.

The town grew rapidly during the 1840s, thanks to large waves of immigration from Northern Ireland and Scotland. By 1851, Johnston had a population of just over 100 people. In 1854, the first school in Johnston opened its doors. By 1865, the population had grown to 350 people. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Johnston experienced some growth spurt that reached highs in 1901 with a population of 1,500 people. However, throughout most of this time there were steady declines in population until reaching a low of just under 500 people in 1998.
